Malls of Shame
What if you could do anything you wanted to with a local strip mall -- the ugliest one, that nasty pile of brick and macadam that blights your vision as you pass it on your way to work every morning? That was the idea behind the Flip a Strip design competition that pitted architects and city planners from around the world against one another to answer that popular question, What can be done about Phoenixs most dreadful strip malls? Several of those designers, as well as some interested bystanders with big-deal design names (Wendell Burnette, Krista Shepherd, Jay Silverberg, and Will Bruder, among them), will gather to discuss the competition, its winners, and its deeper meaning.
