Things we didn’t know about Mel Brooks’ 1974 film Young Frankenstein: • Brooks and Gene Wilder came up with the idea during a coffee break on the set of Blazing Saddles. • Most of the lab equipment props are from the 1931 original. • Aerosmith generated the lyrics for “Walk This Way” after viewing the film.
Now that it’s a hit musical à la The Producers (except even better, because people had already heard of this movie), add to your trivia trove the fact that Brooks wrote all the songs (except Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz”) and that Arizona Broadway Theatre’s 19-member cast brings the hilarious extravaganza to 7701 West Paradise Lane in Peoria through Sunday, June 22. Dinner (which is optional) is served at 5:30 p.m. opening night, Saturday, May 23, with showtime at 7:30. Chef Alex Arce and staff generally develop starters, entrées, desserts, and cocktails that pay homage to the show, and we’re a bit intrigued and intimidated simultaneously in this case. Fire bad! Show-only tickets start at $37, while dinner-and-a-show admission is $62 and up. Reserve your spot at 623-776-8400 or www.azbroadway.org.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 5:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 12 & 5:30 p.m.; Thu., June 5, noon; Thu., June 12, noon. Starts: May 23. Continues through June 22, 2014
