This isn't rocket science. Taking a nighttime run is much more bearable (come summer, anyway) than sunlit jogging. But we'd argue that it makes for more fun, too. You can wear that electric cowboy outfit normally reserved for Halloween and people will cheer rather than laugh. Or you can simply enjoy much cooler weather, though not chilled enough to completely dissipate the latent heat shimmer that reflects the lights so beautifully. And let’s not leave out the glorious people watching.

The Night Run highlights these advantages and more by inviting runners out for an evening 8K road race that begins and ends in downtown Scottsdale. The course churns past restaurants, through the nightclub district, and into residential neighborhoods before looping though the Greenbelt and back. This 8 p.m. race tends to be somewhat serious, organizers note, but there’s also a 3K fun run/walk for the less competition-minded. Light colored clothing and reflective gear are recommended, pajamas are optional, and a headlamp might be smart.

The real celebration begins after the race on the lawn of Scottsdale Civic Center Mall with live music from Repeat Offenders, refreshments, and an awards party.
