Break out the gloves and fly your uncle down from Saskatchewan: Hockey is back. Witness some serious slap shots as the Phoenix Adult Hockey Association plays every Sunday night at the Arcadia Ice Arena, 3853 East Thomas Road. Old pros, wanna-be stars and enthusiasts take to the ice with vigor typically reserved for guys pulling down seven-figure contracts. Now before you fret over freezing your butt off for a bunch of teams you've never heard of -- including the Blues and the Armadillos, who face off on April 3 at 9 p.m., followed by the 10:30 match between the Wild and the Desert Dogs -- consider enjoying the whole thing over a pitcher of ice-cold Canadian beer. The comfortable Ice House Tavern is perfectly positioned behind the east end goal, and provides a great view of some honest-to-goodness hockey action. Olly on down to skate-off
4/2-4/3
New props and gimmicks have been added to this year's Phoenix Am Skateboard Contest on Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, at Desert West Skateboard Plaza, 6501 West Virginia. But the fourth annual event isn't budging when it comes to corporate sponsors (read: no "extreme" soda jerks allowed). "It keeps getting bigger every year, but bigger in a good way," says Ed Cox, part owner of local Cowtown Skateboards, who's putting on the event. "We're not gonna have Mountain Dew out there. It's still a grassroots thing, so we only involve skateboard companies." Cowtown has added a pink polka-dotted hooptie -- "A '70s or '80s Pontiac, I think," Cox says -- to the course. (The first to jump through the driver or passenger side window wins $100.) Admission is $5; the first 500 get a free tee shirt. Call 602-233-8715 or see www.cowtownskateboards.com. -- Ashlea Deahl
