Out and About
Rainbows, hearts, symbols of man, a nude self-portrait? This out is so on.
With a ta-ta to 2010, Arizona artist Julio Cesar Rodarte ponders life and love in The Gay Is Out! exhibition about being, well, gay and out. In a collection of acrylic paintings that utilize dynamic shapes, patterns, and a screamingly bright color palette, Rodarte literally asks, What is love? in a work that uses graphic human forms to represent love and sex. Another boasts a stenciled, Im here, Im queer, get used to it! and shows the artist, clad in jean shorts and headphones, standing on a striped pedestal and surrounded by pink clouds.
