The spirit of Pat Tillman marches on -- and runs and walks -- on Saturday, April 16, when the inaugural "Pat's Run" makes its way through the streets of Tempe, starting at 8 a.m.
Already, nearly 3,000 participants from almost three dozen states across the country have registered for the 4.2-mile excursion, in honor of the former Sun Devils and Cardinals football player who was killed in action in Afghanistan as a U.S. Army Ranger last year. The course, which includes a .42-mile kids' run, begins on the east side of Wells Fargo Arena, and ends at the 42-yard line of Sun Devil Stadium's Frank Kush Field. Registration is $25 at the ASU ticket office -- 480-965-2381 -- until April 15, or $30 on race day. Proceeds benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation. See -- Joe Watson

Like a Gilligan's Island rerun, shrieks of "Mayday! Mayday!" will echo across Tempe Town Lake, 80 East Rio Salado Parkway, as a fleet begins a voyage from which many might never return. Don't dial the Coast Guard; this impending nautical disaster is the fun-filled sixth annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, during which wanna-be mariners design, build, and decorate boats made from material of suspect seaworthiness. Stretch your limits on Pilates Day

Spare-tire-wearing scoffers may view Pilates as some sort of a frou-frou mind-body ritual that doesn't actually affect the physique. A series of slow, controlled stretches on a mat doesn't sound as trying as pumping iron plates. But considering that one of the beginner regimens -- "the hundred" -- basically consists of 100 modified sit-ups from hell, it's no wonder that Pilates is considered one of the best systems of "core" exercises for sculpting the waist, abdomen, and pelvic areas. On Saturday, April 16, Pilates enthusiasts in cities around the world will celebrate International Pilates Day by gathering in groups of 100 to perform "the hundred."
