Playing By Art

Last month beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert passed away. While the prolific writer never shied away from intellectual debates, it’s fair to say that he took quite a clobbering online in 2010 when he declared that video games could never be art. Bookmans Mesa sidesteps the semantics and celebrates the artfulness of games and all they inspire with Controllers & Canvas 2.0, an art and gaming event Saturday, May 11.

The video game art of Anabel Martinez, Chad Stafford, and Mel the Office Gamer Girl will deck the walls as nerds test their knowledge of video game trivia during Beat the Geek: Video Game Edition. A costume competition from 3 to 5 p.m. will lure in the cosplayers, while kiddies participate in a video game character coloring contest. It wouldn’t be a party without some choice retro titles and current hits available to play in person.

Sat., May 11, 3-7 p.m., 2013
