Red Rock Fest
So, let me get this straight. Even after three major film festivals in February -- four, if you count the ongoing Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation at Centerpoint (see Repertory Film) -- you're still hungry for more film-festival action? Well, okay, but you'll have to hit the road, as this year's edition of the Sedona International Film Festival is coming up next weekend -- it's scheduled Friday, March 3; Saturday, March 4; and Sunday, March 5, at various locations beneath the red rocks. Now is the time to make arrangements, if you plan to go.
Featured are showings of new films from the Philippines (Jose Rizal and Curacha), the Czech Republic (Cosy Dens and All My Loved Ones), Cuba, Italy, New Zealand, Canada and Britain (The Wisdom of Crocodiles, featuring Oscar nominee Jude Law), as well as the U.S., including many selections from right here in Arizona. There's also a tribute to actress and blacklistee Marsha Hunt. For details call 1-800-780-2787 or 1-520-282-0747.
If you can't wait until next weekend, or don't want to make the trek, there is an unusual cinema-ish multimedia event here in town: a showing of Jacob Holdt's American Pictures, a documentary chronicle of the Danish photographer's five-year trek across this continent, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 29, at La Sala, located in the University Center Building on the Arizona State University West campus, 4701 West Thunderbird.
The documentary consists of "3,000 photos, music, interviews and narration and has been shown more than 1,150 times at 300 colleges and universities across the United States since 1982." Holdt reportedly sold his blood to buy film for his camera, and his pictures are said to offer a powerful outsider's perspective on the impoverished and disenfranchised side of America. Admission is free. For details call 602-543-6330 or 602-543-5959.
