She's So Cold
If you're accustomed to adaptations of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales, you might not be aware how dark and frightening the originals can be -- but they also drip with remote, exotic beauty, from the Little Mermaid's underwaterscape to the glittery, lifeless domain of the Snow Queen. The latter tale has inspired a holiday tradition that's Phoenix's alone. (Naturally, we've latched on to the very coldest of all stories here, in the land of outdoor turkey dinners and no shoveling.)
Frances Smith Cohen's Snow Queen, Center Dance Ensemble's annual epic fantasy performed to a score by Sergei Prokofiev, infuses welcome variety into a dance calendar dominated by a proliferation of Nutcrackers. And with 50 schoolchildren in each show, you'd better grab tickets before all those Nanas snatch them up.
Saturdays, 2 & 7 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 5 p.m. Starts: Dec. 1. Continues through Dec. 16, 2012
