If you think “eureka” is nothing more than an Archimedian exclamation, you’re dead wrong. Eureka is a giant robot pilot in the Japanese anime Eureka Seven, which features hallmarks of such animated mecha classics as Mobile Suit Gundam and Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. In the series, a 14-year-old boy named Renton Thurston has a fateful encounter with a giant robot and its mysteriously intriguing pilot, Eureka. What follows is an adventure that seamlessly blends one part puppy love with one part pure mecha action. To spice things up, Eureka Seven adds a twist: Eureka Seven’s giant robots have the ability to surf on particles of light.

Now American audiences can check out the anime in feature-film form (along with bonus behind-the-scenes material from the animation studio Bones), as Bandai Entertainment’s Eureka Seven – Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers heads to theaters on Thursday, September 24. The one-night-only showing starts at 7:30 p.m. at various Valley cinemas, including AMC Westgate 20, 9400 West Hanna Lane in Glendale; AMC Desert Ridge 18, 21001 North Tatum Boulevard; and CineMark 16, 1051 North Dobson Road in Mesa.
