Attending a workshop at Arcosanti is usually as much about the setting as the course itself, but the two typically intersect in determined fashion. Arcosanti is the-still developing vision of late architect Paolo Soleri, whose belief in Arcology -- the blending of architecture and ecology -- created a compact society where mixed-use structures reduce urban sprawl and enhance a sense of community. And what can spawn community building better than a day of spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting and felting? Featuring artist Ann Morton, whose recent public art project Ground Cover placed blankets over an empty downtown lot, the Meet & Greet Fiber Retreat is a chance for new and established fiber artists to (pardon the pun) unwind a little while creating new works in an inspiring environment.
The free, daylong workshops run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, January 25, at Arcosanti, 1.5 miles northeast of Arcosanti Road from Interstate 17's exit 263 for Cordes Junction. Call 928-632-7135 or visit www.arcosanti.org.
Sat., Jan. 25, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., 2014
