February is an awful time of year to be a sports fan because there’s basically nothing of importance going on in any major sport (regular-season basketball and hockey games that are effectively meaningless don’t count). This is why Sports Illustrated devotes an entire February issue to the fast-paced sport of staring at scantily-clad models. It’s also why anyone who even kind of cares about baseball is excited about spring training. As boring as exhibition baseball can be, it is, at the very least, something to do.

If you need something to hold you over until spring training starts in earnest, you might want to check out the Spring Training Festival at Scottsdale Civic Center, 3939 North Drinkwater Boulevard, Saturday, February 16. While the event will be light on actual baseball, it will be heavy on things to do. Activities include sports-meet-science exhibits, a meet-and-greet with past greats, and a hot dog topping cookoff.
