The folks at the ASU Art Museum are so short-sighted... this weekend, at least, when they present their seventh annual Short Film and Video Festival. The longest of the evening's entries clocks in at a mere nine minutes; the shortest is gone in 60 seconds.Celebrating auteurs of various visions and levels of experience, the festival attracts submissions from around the globe. This year, 359 entries poured in from 30 states and 19 countries; the 27 juror-selected pieces represent the U.S., Canada and Australia. Local entries include ASU student Yurika Abe's Something About LIZ, a documentary about a hearing-impaired fellow student. Genres range from animation to non-narrative, with awards honoring the best of the fest.
The free festival gets rolling at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19, on the plaza outside ASU's Nelson Fine Arts Center, 10th Street and Mill in Tempe. Attendees are welcome to lug in picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs. Call 480-965-2787 or see asuartmuseum.asu.edu for more details.- Jill Koch
