Kinda jammy, kinda classic-rock and kinda alt-country, Steel Train has nevertheless found itself lumped in with its more age-appropriate post-punk and emo counterparts. Sure, the band's on Drive-Thru Records and sings about, like, feelings and stuff, but it also contemplates the relationships between fathers and sons, sympathizes with alley cats, and simultaneously praises and curses the road. And after two EPs, the New York quintet chose Stephen Barncard (Jefferson Airplane, the Dead) to produce its debut full-length, Twilight Tales From the Prairies of the Sun. If that's still not enough of a non-emo indicator, consider that Twilight's special guests include late-'60s Byrds drummer Gene Parsons and mandolin innovator David Grisman.
