Contemplate Lee Berger's "Pensive Beauty" and other works at ArtLink's First Friday.

Got a New Year's resolution to get out a little more in 2002? Here's your chance to get a hefty dose of schmoozing, courtesy of ArtLink's monthly First Fridays. The year's inaugural event will showcase about 30 downtown Phoenix galleries for a roving night of art and adventure.

ArtLink insiders recommend that you start off the night at the Burton Barr Central Library, where you can park and catch a free shuttle bus to the other locations. Volunteers will make the rides interesting with poetry readings, skits and monologues. But before hopping on board, check out Casey McKee's "Exposing Reality," a collection of photographic emulsion images developed on wood, inside the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 North Central.

In what may turn into an annual event, The Paper Heart Gallery and Studio will throw an edgy, adult bash called "Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll." Artists Michele Fuller, Jimi Girdner, Sergio Lepore, Judy Shoemaker, and Jennifer and Scott Sanders will show work in a variety of media (in the spirit of the evening, Scott Sanders will paint a nude woman to blend in with a brick wall). Enjoy food and drink, and rock out to live music by Steven Campbell at 7, Posted Green at 8, Triple Play at 9 and Wraught at 10. The Paper Heart is at 222 North Fifth Avenue.

Each month, ArtLink also features a Mystery Gallery, a donated space for member artists who don't have their own studio or permanent gallery. This time around, the Mystery Gallery will be at Artisan Lofts on Central, 1410 North Central. Creations by Stephanie Rice, David Quan and mixed-media artist Lisa Takata will be featured.

The custom set-design company Urbana Productions will also open its warehouse space at 411 South Second Street to the public. Resident artist Lee Berger, who describes his art as "somewhere between abstract and surreal," will show acrylic-on-canvas pieces, with local band Gringo Surprise providing a blast of modern rock.
