In an era when every TV show and movie seems to be a remake, adaptation, or a re-released remake of an adaptation -- in 3-D! -- an all-too-common consensus is that creative types (and their suited financiers) have just plain run out of ideas.
But the Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps takes rebooting old material to hilarious, unexpected levels. The theatrical melange was adapted from Hitchcock’s 1935 classic spy film combined with John Buchan’s novel (which served as the film’s basis) and stars a cast of four who take on more than 150 characters throughout the play of intrigue, murder, and mystery.
