The Glendale Watermelon Festival isn’t about finding out who’s got the best melons. It’s a time-honored Glendale tradition that dates back to 1949, when local melon growers got together to celebrate their achievements. Once upon a time, the event drew thousands of people who served up some 80,000 pounds of watermelon.

This year’s event revives that tradition by including many of the events held at the original festival. Guests can expect everything from melon carving to a beauty pageant, and games like tug of war, watermelon toss, and a stacking contest. Live music from bands including 56 Rockabilly and the South Mountain Community College Latin Jazz Band will set the festive mood while grown-ups can head to the Coors Light Beer Garden and the little ones play in the Kids Fun Zone. To uphold the tradition of the fest, they’ll also crown a Watermelon Queen with the title of Miss Arizona Festival.

Indulge in melon madness from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Murphy Park, 58th and Glendale avenues in Historic Glendale. Admission is free. For more information visit www.azmelonfestival.com.
