Plan a solo desert hike and take your pick of potential disasters. You could stumble across a pissed off rattler, get lost and have to foot the bill for a rescue chopper, or sever your finger on a sharp plant like TV idiot, er, explorer, Bear Grylls.
Avoid all that mess and join a guided hike like the Desert Washes Walk. Park docent and former earth science instructor Tom McGuire will lead moderate level hikers up a drainage area in Cottonwood Wash while discussing local plant life and the geology of wash basins.
