Fairy tales teach little girls that handsome guys are desirable and romantic relationships always end in happily ever after. Barf. OJ Simpson and Scott Peterson, on the other hand, taught adults that sometimes the glass slipper comes in the form of a toe tag.
Fiction takes a cue from real life in Gone Girl, which award-winning author Gillian Flynn will sign at The Poisoned Pen, 4014 North Goldwater Boulevard in Scottsdale. The novel’s plot centers on a seemingly upbeat and happily married woman who disappears on her five-year wedding anniversary.
A subsequent investigation reveals startling facts about the doting wife; not surprising, since Flynn readily admits her preference for wicked stepmothers over doe-eyed heroines. “I particularly mourn the lack of female villains…” she once wrote in an essay for Powell’s. “I'm talking violent, wicked women. Scary women. Don't tell me you don't know some.”
