Youth Based

While the action emanating from the local nine at the BOB this year has been roughly akin to watching paint dry, the up-and-coming rookies participating in the Arizona Summer League offer a unique alternative for baseball purists hoping to catch an early glimpse of tomorrow's stars. There's nowhere to go but up for some of baseball's brightest young sluggers, so catch them in your own backyard while you still can during Arizona Summer League Rookie Ball, at Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 North 83rd Avenue in Peoria. Games begin at 7 p.m. This week marks the beginning of the league's second half (which runs through August 31), and the action heats up as the PSC's major league field, the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, hosts several games featuring developmental squads from both teams. Admission is free. Call 623-773-8700. -- Craig Wallach

Go take a hike

SAT 7/30
If a six-mile hike sounds like a cake walk, imagine the cake rising 200 feet. On Saturday, July 30, Gilbert Parks and Recreation, 70 East Civic Center Drive in Gilbert, leads a road trip to Flagstaff for the "Dry Lake Hills Trail Hike" through the forests of the San Francisco Peaks, departing the Valley at 6 a.m. Registration costs $15. Call 480-503-6242. -- Niki D'Andrea

Meals on Wheels
Run cool on heavy fuel

If your morning bike ride ritual includes hurried fixin's of Fruity Pebbles and peanut butter toast, maybe it's time you start on an empty stomach. The Arizona Bicycle Club hosts a free weekly two-hour ride -- with a stop for a decent breakfast -- starting at Granada Park, 20th Street and Maryland Avenue, at 6:30 a.m. every Sunday through September 30. Call 602-264-9318. -- Joe Watson
