Celeb sensations David Beckham and Posh Spice aren't the only doses of coolness that England's been hurling across the pond lately. Witness the growth of dubstep, the darkly rhythmic and beyond-bassy EDM (electronic dance music) descendent of UK garage and grime birthed in London's underground. Championed by such Brit DJs as Skream and Digital Mystikz, the murkily melancholic genre flings kinky beats and syncopated rhythms, submerged in an overwhelming sub-bass thrum. Imported to the States by such turntablists as Baltimore's Joe Nice, dubstep's gonna get its due here in P-Town, thanks to Cruz Robles (a.k.a. CRUZ) and a slew of local spinsters who'll be blowing out the subwoofers at the Upstairs Bar of Homme, 138 West Camelback, on Sunday July 29, during Subliminal Sundaze. Along with DJ Terra, Steve Edwards, MC Redbird, and pair of jocks named Ultra Black (consisting of The One Spy and Adroit), CRUZ's crew will drop both dubstep hits and their own original genre tracks on the final Sunday of every month. Get to steppin' at 9 p.m. with no cover.
