Broadway musicals such as M. Butterfly, Annie, Chicago, A Chorus Line and Cabaret are the inspirations for this year's event. Pros from Tony & Guy, Dilemma Salon and Billingsley's Salon send out models glammed up in matching fashions and far-out hair as Dead Air Dave, afternoon radio host for The Edge, 103.9 FM, provides colorful commentary. In between the modeling segments, actors from Phoenix Theatre perform a variety of hair-related hits. "They'll bring a real Broadway feel to it," says Tracy Hatch, development manager for Body Positive.
Now in its fifth year, the bash is bigger than ever. "It's been getting more and more popular every year, and this year we're expecting around 500 people," says Hatch. And the audience always gets a kick out of the show, she adds. "The crowd starts hootin' and hollerin', cheering for the models."
Alex Billingsley of Billingsley's Salon in Scottsdale says he's planning looks for 16 models inspired by Grease ("'50s style, but for the new millennium") and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, plus a "totally over-the-top" fantasy segment. "Our salon's presentation is about eight minutes long, so that's why we need to make it really interactive for the audience," he says.
A couple of surprises are also in store for Much Ado spectators, but Hatch and Billingsley can't elaborate. Hatch says, "All I can say is it's going to be absolutely hilarious!"
