Hit the greens for no green
"Be the ball, Danny." Now your son or daughter doesn't have to caddie at Bushwood to get free advice from a pro: 8- to 17-year-olds can enroll in free golf lessons, thanks to a year-round program sponsored by the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Choose from beginning, intermediate or advanced classes at these courses: Aguila, Papago, Encanto, Palo Verde, Maryvale or Cave Creek. Classes are small, with roughly 10 students per PGA instructor, and most sessions meet twice a week for three weeks. See www.phoenix.gov/GOLF for a schedule, and then call the course to register. Clubs and balls are provided. If you need a hobby for the kids this summer, it's in the hole. -- Kim Toms

Kids ponder games people played
So your kids think opposable thumbs sprouted so folks could play Nintendo. Sounds like somebody could stand to gain a little historical perspective. Cultivate some at the Desert Botanical Garden, where, on Tuesday, June 3, the Sensational Summer Sampler series focuses on "Ancient Games of the Southwest." Little ones experience the good old days via hands-on demos of games played by the Sonoran Desert's native cultures; then, the kids get crafty and create take-home trinkets. The fun and games begin at 6:30 p.m. at the garden, 1201 North Galvin Parkway. The one-hour program is free with regular admission: $3.50 for ages 3 to 12, $7.50 for adults (advance registration not required). Call 480-941-1225 or see www.desertbotanical.org for details. -- Jill Koch

Library screens anime classics
Glendale Public Library's Foothills Branch youth activity director Kristen Fletcher-Spear isn't giving up what movies she'll present at the library's All-Day Anime Festival on Saturday, May 31, but she does promise a selection of brand-new and prerelease features suitable for ages 12 to 19.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Japanimation festival will be complemented by a smattering of Japanese cultural education like food tasting and trivia contests. Enthusiastic fans are encouraged to wear costumes to the event, where the attendees will choose the featured movies from a collection donated by anime companies. "It's all subtitled," Fletcher-Spear says. "If I ever show dubbed videos, they all boo me." Admission is free; the Foothills Branch is located at 19055 North 57th Avenue in Glendale. For details call 623-930-3837. -- Brendan Joel Kelley
