You may think that knitting and lace-making are for the old and sexually doomed. For you, they conjure up images of Swiss grandmothers knitting socks all day, too comfortable and plain-brained from living on dirty war money all of their lives.
Truth is, both crafts have been re-transfigured in the 21st century. In “Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting," 27 artists from seven countries prove that this provocative new wing of artistic expression is just as engaging as any other. Freddie Robbin’s Craft Kills questions the perception of craft as a passive form while Cat Mazza’s Knitoscope raises awareness of sweatshop labor. The work of Sabrina Gschwandtner, founder of KnitKnit, redefines the traditional knitting circle as an arena of debate where museum visitors are welcome to participate.
