Former Phoenicians Christopher Rutledge and William Fees may have left for Seattle in 2010, but they've hardly been laying low in the ancestral homeland of grunge. Instead of wrapping up in flannels and mainlining coffee, the stoner metal duo (guitar and drums, natch) has been on the road. A lot. "We have basically been touring our asses off around the U.S. for the past four years," Rutledge says. "When this year is over, we will have spent about nine months on the road." Their upcoming stop in Phoenix is something of a homecoming, but don't expect sentimentality from the duo (or local support acts, crust-punkers Kuato and Quaid and doom-core outfit TwinGiant) when they head to the Palo Verde Lounge this weekend. Their latest release, The Chronicles of Dirty Dick, plays like a shorter, faster version of Sleep's Homeric epic Dopesmoker, all bluesy grind and massive fuzz riffs. Copies of the record, pressed by tiny Michigan-based Saw Her Ghost Records, are pretty much gone, says Rutledge, and the band is itching to get some more sludgy, gut-rattling jams pressed on wax soon. "We just need to find a label or someone with some cash to put it out," he laughs. "Any takers?"
