The adage that a picture is worth a thousand words is always in style, and, in our fast-paced, capture-the-moment, Instagrammed world, this is even more pervasive. It is the idea that photographs are timeless markers on the road of life that leads us to aim the camera. This is the idea behind “The Politics of Place,” on view in the Orme Lewis Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum.

The exhibition focuses on Latin American photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries and their use of film to document the world before them. From social injustice and political happenings to images that cement a national identity or give power to individual ideals, the works hold people and landscapes in place forever -- a mirror to another, former reality.
