Anyone who has watched RuPaul’s Drag Race for more than 10 minutes can vouch for the magic of drag. Seeing a burly, masculine man transform into a glamorous, six-foot-something woman in heels is pretty impressive, but doubly so once she starts lip-syncing Britney or Cher. Ru paints a small picture of the scene. Phoenix has a very rich drag community, thanks to bars like Charlie’s, The Rock, and Cruisin’ on 7th. Sharon Needles and Jinkx Monsoon may be household names for Drag Race fans, but so are Barbra Seville and Coco St. James for anyone who has spent time in the local scene. Photographer Paul Elliott captures some of the Valley’s most sparkly, notable queens in his show “This D**k Walks Into a Bar,” which captures intimate moments of drag in black and white.
