Although the Broadway musical The Bridges of Madison County (which did exist, despite your conviction that it was just a chalupa-fueled dream you had) is scheduled to close this weekend, its composer, Jason Robert Brown, remains in the limelight by virtue of his other profound, iconoclastic works. Like the Drama Desk award-winning The Last Five Years (soon to be an Anna Kendrick film; no, really), at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre through Sunday, May 18.

It’s a two-person show about a couple that meets, loves, marries, and eventually breaks up. She tells the story backward, he tells it forward, and they sing together for just a few minutes in the middle. Experience heartbreak and humor, with a live band (that makes musicals so much better!), at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, in the intimate Actor’s Cafe at 4720 North Scottsdale Road. Call 480-483-1664 or visit www.desertstages.org for tickets, $22 and $25.

Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: March 21. Continues through May 18, 2014
