This is an odd thing to say about a team that won a title five years ago, but the Phoenix Mercury just can’t seem to get over the hump. The team has plenty of star power (Diana Taruasi, Penny Taylor and, more recently, Britney Griner), but all they’ve had to show for it in the last few years is a series of disappointing playoff exits.
The team responsible for those playoff exits -- the Minnesota Lynx -- will take on the Mercury Wednesday, June 18, at US Airways Center, 201 East Jefferson Street. The Lynx are clearly the top team of the WNBA, so Wednesday’s game figures to be a good measure of the Mercury’s title hopes. The Mercury lost all 6 games against Minnesota last season. A win would be a big first step toward finally getting over the hump.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. game start at $10 and are available through www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 602-252-9622.
