There's drama in the ice cream world.
Last week, after contacting Utah-based ice cream company Sub Zero Ice Cream, I learned of a split between that company and the folks opening a new shop in Arcadia called 32 Degrees Ice Cream. Sub Zero is listed on the building permit that was posted on the front door at 4730 E. Indian School Road last week.
But according to 32 Degrees representative Todd Lawrence, the paperwork with the city has been updated to reflect that it will, in fact, be a 32 Degrees store.
Lawrence says that there is pending litigation between the two companies, but that "there is no reason to believe we're not going to open." He says that Sub Zero founder Jerry Hancock's comments to me about 32 Degrees not opening are "just threats -- we're the ones who filed the lawsuit."
So who breached a contract with whom? That story will have to play out in court.
In the meantime, Lawrence assures me, "We are, in fact, opening." The tentative opening will be in early August, which isn't a day too soon in the middle of an Arizona summer.
32 Degrees will offer customized treats frozen on the spot, a distinctive process that uses liquid nitrogen to create a creamy texture. Customers will be able to choose from a variety of bases -- premium ice cream, custard, yogurt, and gelato -- as well as different flavors and mix-ins.
