Pancakes & Booze Art Show

If there are two things Tom Kirlin loves, it's fine art and flapjacks -- hence his ever-expanding Pancakes and Booze Art Show. The concoction of booze, batter, and breakout artists, which has popped up everywhere from Los Angeles to Brooklyn, Portland to Atlanta, is once again serving up breakfast in downtown Phoenix.

The Big Heap

What do mid-century lamps, chalkboard paint, and antlers have in common? Not much, except we'd bet you could find each at the giant vintage and handmade festival The Big Heap.

Vintage lovers, artists, and craftsmen will take over Salt River Fields, 7555 North Pima Road in Scottsdale, from November 21 through 23. The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 21, but the spotlight will be turned on fashion from 5 to 7 p.m. during the Fashion Benefit for Phoenix Children's Hospital. This fashion cocktail party costs $5 with all proceeds going toward the hospital's arts program. To purchase tickets, $7 for a single day pass and $15 for a three-day pass, and for more information about the entire weekend, visit www.thebigheap.com. Evie Carpenter

The film follows the group of daredevils as they push the boundaries of their own physical and mental limitations for the sake of the performance.

Philips of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art about their collaborative exhibition, "Covert Operations: Investigating the Known Unknowns." This symposium will delve into the who, what, where, when, and why behind the researching and reasoning of investigating surveillance tapes, terrorist profiling, and other classified government happenings in the name of art. The "Covert Operations" discussion happens at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, at the Scottsdale Museum for Contemporary Art. General admission tickets are $5. Museum members and students get in free. Visit www.smoca.org or call 480-874-4666. Katie Johnson

Holiday Aerial Workshop

If all you want for the holidays is to fly through the air supported only by silk tied in a few knots around your ankles and wrists or to swing from a hoop suspended from the rafters, then grab your courage and all your strength and head to Studio B at the Metropolitan Arts Institute, 1700 North Seventh Avenue, on Sunday, November 23, for the Scorpius Dance Theater's Holiday Aerial Workshop.

From noon to 3 p.m., you'll learn the ins and outs of using aerial silks and hoops from master aerialist and Scorpius' assistant director Gavin Sisson. The beginner and intermediate level workshop is $40 if you pre-register or $50 at the door. To reserve a spot and for more information, call 480-390-4900 or visit www.scorpiusdance.com/classes.
