Medlock Plaza on Camelback Road and Central Avenue will soon have a prime spot in its mom-and-pop-centric retail center, and something has got to fill it.
As was previously reported, Red Hot Robot, the toy gallery at 14 West Camelback Road, will be moving out at the end of the month. (The new location will be announced tomorrow during its "Only Locals" First Friday art show reception.) And it'll leave one of the city's most unique shopping centers without an artsy indie business.
Jackalope Ranch had a meeting of the minds and came up with a list of potential replacements that could make good neighbors with Smeeks, Halo, Stinkweeds, Frances, and the rest of the spots at the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Camelback Road. Here are our 10 (semi-selfish) wishes:
1. Funky Doughnut Shop
À la Portland, Oregon's Voodoo Doughnuts.
2. Gun Shop
Because Smeeks' cap, Nerf dart, and bubble-blowing guns just aren't going to cut it for some Arizonans.
3. Hipster Laundromat
Wash and dry skinny jeans while surfing free wi-fi and listening to Stinkweeds' staff picks.
4. A Salt, or Spice Store
For food seasoning, not for getting stoned.
5. Conspire North
6. FilmBar Video Depot
Take home indie classics after they're screened at the soon-to-be-launched repertory theater.
7. Medical Marijuana Head Shop
Find supplies for your pot of gold.
8. Vegetarian Shoes
Jackalope Ranch loves the one in Brighton, England; a Phoenix locale would need to stock plenty of mandals.
9. Changing Hands Bookstore CenPho
Equipped with Phoenix's first bona fide newsstand.
10. The "Phoenix Could Be So Much Cooler" Gallery
Pictorial and memorabilia odes to all of the awesome stuff - Kon Tiki Hotel, Phoenix Fox Theater, Log Cabin Motel - that has been torn down in this town, as curated by Marshall Shore and former New Times contributor Douglas Towne.
