Last week we announced the finalists for Phoenix New Times' 2014 Big Brain Awards.

Today we're back with another announcement. In celebration of the fifth Big Brain Awards (time flies, huh?) -- an honor that recognizes emerging creatives just beginning their careers -- New Times has decided to also give awards to five community leaders who have fostered local talent, mentored young artists, and are hard at work making Phoenix a better place to live.

Call them elder statesmen. We prefer Urban Legends. And they are:

Visual Art: Lisa Sette, Lisa Sette Gallery in Scottsdale Performing Art: Charlie Levy, Stateside Presents and Crescent Ballroom Design: Mookesh Patel, associate professor, Department of Visual Communication Design, ASU Culinary Art: Charleen Badman, chef, FnB Urban Vision: Kimber Lanning

In the coming weeks, we'll be profiling our Urban Legends as well as the finalists for 2014 Big Brain Awards, and celebrating all of them -- as well as announcing the Big Brain winners -- at Artopia, an evening of food, drink, art and performance.

Artopia will take place Friday, April 25, at Bentley Projects in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 the day of the event. A ticket presale will run from Wednesday, March 26, through Sunday, March 30. Subscribers to New Times' arts newsletter will receive an access code by e-mail. Tickets are on sale to the public starting Monday, March 31.
