The Red Dress Tour @ Roosevelt Row
Before Art Detour 23 officially kicks off this weekend (whether we need it or not), local artists Kara Roschi and Ernesto Moncada will be giving visitors and downtown locals alike a taste of the Third Friday action on Roosevelt Row. Wear red and join parade from gallery to gallery tonight with Roschi to get an insider's perspective on the art scene.
The tour kicks off around 6 p.m. at Space 55, 636 E. Pierce Street. Find our map for Third Friday and Detour here and more info on the Red Dress Tour here.
Treetop Poetry Festival @ Jobot
Heads and brains will collide as Phoenix's top poets take on contenders from Flagstaff and Tucson. These guys spit rhymes -- and maybe a little backstage vitriol -- that will alternately make you blush, shout, or piss your pants, depending on the poet. The main event takes place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, at 918 N. 5th Street. You can also catch free poetry-related events including a nerd slam, haiku death match and Edgar Allen Poe reading throughout the day. Check out more event information on the Poetry Festival's facebook invite.
Mystery Flash Mob @ Tempe Marketplace
There's a certain allure to the idea of a flash mob. It's random, often funny -- and is one of the few non-illegal ways we can fly our freak flags in public and enjoy the anonymity that comes with being part of a crowd. Sign up at http://www.flashmobaz.com/ to be part of a group that will unleash some bizarre mystery prank on unsuspecting patrons ... somewhere on Saturday. OK, it might sound a little strange that you have to sign up in advance to partake in a flash mob... but we'll cut these guys some slack for bringing humor into Phoenix when we need it the most.
D-Backs National Anthem Auditions @ Chase Field
Oh, say can you see, a whole field of American Idol wannabes? Unlike the tanking television show, you don't need a golden ticket to try out for a slot singing the national anthem at an upcoming Diamondbacks game. Just show up at 401 E. Jefferson Street between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and belt it out for the judges -- who, we guarantee, will be kinder than Simon. Free admission.
Tiki Pool Party @ OH Pool Lounge
Considering we're expecting our first 90-degree weekend, participants in the inaugural Jackalope Ranch Readers' Trail Ride might need a little cooling off after hitting Arcadia Loop. Reward yourself with a $6 mai tai and a little laid-back island reggae music at the Hotel Valley Ho, 6850 E. Main Street in Scottsdale. The free tiki-themed pool party runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
