Celebrate Breasts at Rhythm Room's Boob-a-Palooza 3

An event called Boob-a-Palooza is bound to turn some heads, because who doesn't love boobs? Now that I've got your attention, you can learn more about The Rhythm Room's third annual Boob-a-Palooza, an event that's part fundraiser, and part rockin' swing dance show.

Tell me a little bit about Boob-a-palooza. I started walking in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day in 2009. Since I'm the general manager of the Rhythm Room, I am blessed enough to be able to use that as one of my avenues of fundraising. It started about three years ago, a couple of people that I work with helped me do my first fundraiser and this is the third one now.

We get bands together and do a whole night of music, raffles, and all kinds of fun and informative stuff for breast cancer. All the money goes towards my fundraising to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Why breast cancer? Are you, or is somebody you're close to a survivor? My sister, she's a year and two months younger than I am, was diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer, and she had a complete mastectomy. She is still fighting, and winning the battle against breast cancer. When she was diagnosed, it was really hard for me, I didn't know what to do. I'm the big sister, I don't have any kids, I'm not married, she's married with children, so it just felt really weird.

Somebody mentioned to me doing the 60-mile walk for breast cancer, and I've taken that on. That first year when I was training, my sister told me, "You can't walk 60 miles." And I'm like, "If you can do chemotherapy, then I can walk 60 miles." That's how it started out is with my sister, but in addition to that, along the way I've met a lot of really neat people and heard a lot of stories.

So over the years, this will be my fifth time participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day and it's incorporated not just my sister, but my family members, my friends' family members, and customers that I meet at the Rhythm Room, they'll tell me stories about their loved ones and their struggles and fights with breast cancer, so I walk for them, too.

So, this is a swing dance-themed night? Yeah, we've got Pat Robertson and the Heymakers, Whiskey Kiss, the Jimmy Waldron Trio. Each raffle ticket is going to be a dollar, so you can buy one raffle ticket for one dollar and possibly win a $200 beach cruiser bicycle. I've prided myself on including everybody in the raffle. Sometimes when you have raffle tickets that are $5-10, people don't get too much of a chance, or the people that come don't have a whole lot of money to donate, they don't get a chance to participate in the raffle, so I like to keep the raffle ticket at $1 a piece so everyone can get a chance.

What else is going on at the event aside from music? We've got the AZ Lindy Hop Society. [Founder Steve] Conrad, he's going to be there giving swing dance lessons and he will also be performing. In between bands, we're going to put on some music and he and his partner will do some swing dancing and get other people to do performance-type swing dancing.

We're going to have raffles, we're going to raffle off some beach cruiser bicycles, some big gift packages, concert tickets, the bands are going to have shirts and CDs and stuff, they're putting a package together from all the bands. We might have another guitar this year. In the past we've had guitars before, so I'm hoping that we'll be able to get another guitar to raffle off. And then, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get a dunk tank, but we had a dunk tank one year, so that was a lot of fun. That kind of depends on the weather, too.
