A Phoenix man convicted of murdering his wife because he believed she was trying to poison him was sentenced in a Maricopa County Superior Court this morning.
Judge Karen O'Conner sentenced 46-year-old Primitivo Almonte to 16 years in prison for the 2009 murder of his wife.
Phoenix police responded to the scene of the slaying and found Almonte's
wife riddled with bullets and hunched over the steering wheel of her
car near Van Buren Street and 42nd Avenue in March of 2009. She was
pronounced dead at the scene.
Aside from his dead wife, police also found a .22 caliber handgun in the car after Almonte confessed to the murder.
Almonte told cops he killed his wife because he suspected she was trying to poison him.
A more logical explanation for Almonte's motive can be found in his
initial court paperwork, where he's classified as "mentally disturbed."
