Someone has planted foot-long pieces of rebar fashioned into spikes in the Coconino National Forest.
Forest Service officials say five of these spikes have been discovered near the Happy Jack area.
Mogollon Rim District Ranger Linda Wadleigh says the pointed ends actually had been painted to blend in with the ground.
The spikes were responsible for blowing out eight tires over the weekend, according to officials. The five spikes that were discovered were in areas often used by people driving off-highway vehicles.
There haven't been any reported injuries to people or wildlife, but the concern is there. The Forest Service is asking for tips from the public in the case.
