The Arizona Department of Corrections has shut down the westbound Interstate 10 at the Marana exit after a prison inmate was hit by a truck this morning.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves says the inmate is in extremely serious condition.

Department of Corrections officials would not yet identify the inmate when asked this morning.

According to Graves, the inmate was on a work detail picking up trash in the emergency shoulder of the freeway when the wind carried the bag he was using into the westbound lane of the highway.

The inmate, Graves says, chased after the bag and was hit by a truck carrying a horse trailer.

DPS and DOC officials are expected to release more information later in the day. Check back for details.
