Hayden Flour Mills Featured in November Issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine

The Valley's own Hayden Flour Mills is getting a little bit of national attention in the form of a multi-page feature in the November 2015 issue of Martha Steward Living magazine.

Last October, Hayden Flour Mills, a Phoenix-based milling company, was named one of ten finalists in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards. The annual celebration ofAmerican artisans and makers granted Hayden Flours Mills a prize package that included a trip for two to New York City to attend the American Made event, $10,000 to grow the business, a video produced by the Martha Stewart team, and the opportunity to be featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine.

The Martha Stewart Living piece briefly tells the story of Jeff and Emma Zimmerman, the father-daughter team who run the family business. The idea to start up a flour mill began with Jeff's desire to get access to freshly milled heritage grain flour and has since sparked a local movement that's touched farmers, bakers, chefs, and brewers. Hayden Flour Mills began with planting 30 acres of grain in December 2011 and now grows more than 120 acres of a dozen different types of grains — nine of which are photographed and featured in the magazine. 

We wrote about the growth of the local heritage grain and bread movement in a 2014 cover story called "Flour Power," which won first place in the "newspaper food feature category" of the Association of Food Journalists awards this year.
