Now, while August may be hailed as the number-one month for traveling, staycations have become a great way to enjoy and explore your own city with new perspective. If doughnuts are your jam and maybe you’re having trouble justifying the indulgence – or simply looking for a reason to indulge — then you may want to consider joining Phoenix Spokes People for a BFF (Bicycle Friendly Friday) Doughnut Ride. This event starts at 7 a.m. with a meet-up at Rollover Doughnuts, for coffee and well … yes, doughnuts before heading out on a nice 11-mile ride. All are welcome, so join the fun and have a great ride.


Meteor Madness With “Dr. Sky”
Lost Dutchman State Park
8 p.m. on Friday, August 12

Join Lost Dutchman State Park and Steve “Dr. Sky” Kates for an amazing sky experience. This year’s Perseid meteor shower is predicting 150 to 200 shooting stars per hour, according to the American Meteor Society. Which is pretty, ahem, stellar, considering the normal rate is 50 to 75 per hour. The event will include drinks and snacks, a meteor presentation by Dr. Sky, and of course the main event – an incredible meteor shower. One that, according to NASA, hasn’t occurred at this rate since 2009, making this one a must-see.

Pokémon Go Meet-Up

Hosted by Euphoria Gaming L.L.C, this night promises to be a fun-filled Pokemon adventure. This event, being held at Westgate Entertainment District, was postponed from last month in hopes that new and better updates would be in place. So, for those of you finding yourself hopping outdoors at the prospect of a rare capture or opportunities for leveling up, you won’t want to miss this event.

National Roller Coaster Day
Castles n’ Coasters
5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16

On August 16 in 1878, the roller coaster received its first U.S. patent. Back in the early days of coasters, top speed would reach somewhere around five miles per hour, a laughable speed to any modern-day thrill-seeker out there. Today, coasters are exceeding 100 miles per hour with heights at nearly 500 feet, with those same thrill-seekers hungry for more. To celebrate, Castles n’ Coasters is offering free roller coaster rides on both the Desert Storm and Patriot coasters from 5 to 10 p.m. So, whether it’s your first, or 100th ride, this is the day to celebrate. 

Movie Night At The Ballpark

Enjoy a movie under the stars at the Goodyear Ballpark. This month’s showing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is sure to be a unique one in this setting. Gates will open at 7 p.m. with a showtime of 7:30. A concession for snacks and drinks will be available, and admission is free. Just bring a blanket and enjoy the show.
