Apollo's

Apollo's

A longtime favorite of the Phoenix gay scene, Apollo's is the kind of bar where you can have a few beers and hang with a diverse selection of drinkers.
Big Fish Pub

Big Fish Pub

The largish stage located off to the side of this landmark bar and music venue has been graced by plenty of big bands over the years.
Flicka's

Flicka's

Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

http://www.thecomedyspot.net Attached to the Venue of Scottsdale, the Comedy Spot regularly hosts an eclectic selection of local and nationally touring jokesters who've dispensed their yuks on TV and in movies, as well as at college campuses around the nation. It's a laidback alternative to The Improv in Tempe and hilarious Valley comedians like Jay Penn and Sean Dillin unleash side-splitting sets. • Connolly

    Connolly's Bar & Grill

    5160 W. Northern Ave. Glendale, AZ 85301
    623-915-5645

The regulars at this A-frame establishment definitely know how to have a good time, even if it's during the middle of the workweek. Roll up to Connolly's on an average night and witness the upbeat and laid-back atmosphere of the place. Smokers gather outside the front door, yelling jukebox suggestions between puffs or playfully taunting pool players. Meanwhile, the drink-slinging staff are busy pouring such drink specials as $3 domestic pints and well cocktails while conversing with the old school rockers and blue-collar folk gathered at their bar. • Copper Blues

    Copper Blues

    50 W. Jefferson Phoenix, AZ 85003
    480-719-5005

http://www.copperblueslive.com The beer gods have given downtown Phoenix a gift, and they also happen to be live music fans. CityScape's Copper Blues boasts a 60-tap draught beer menu packed with everything from standard domestics to handcrafted artisanal beers and even their own in-house brew. A whole lot of top-shelf liquor gets the vibe going at this warm, dimly-lit blues bar, where bands keep the beat on a stage lined with taps, one of the spot's two bars. The second floor location gives views of Central Avenue and the downtown skyline, while plush leather couches and dozens of tables keep things comfortable in the massive indoor space. Though the bar is essentially an expansion of CityScape's comedy club, Stand Up Live, Copper Blues has carved out a niche of its own. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • The Cornish Pasty Co.

    The Cornish Pasty Co.

    960 W. University Drive Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-894-6261

http://www.cornishpastyco.com Hip, railroad-car-size establishment specializing in Cornwall's answer to the potpie, the pasty (pronounced pass-tee). Traditionally, these jumbo turnovers are filled with steak, onion, rutabaga and potato, and are referred to as oggies. The place also has porkies, which are (you guessed it) stuffed with pork, sage, onion, potato and apple; and lamb and mint varieties. But owner Dean Thomas has pulled a Ben & Jerry's on the concept, adding everything from a pesto chicken to chicken tikka masala and a Philly cheese-steak version. Try 'em all, and you're sure to end up an oggie addict. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Crabby Don

    Crabby Don's

    3861 E. Baseline Road Gilbert, AZ 85234
    480-558-7540

http://www.crabbydons.net Disregard this Gilbert joint's fierce-faced logo and surly-sounding name, as Crabby Don's is often the site of fun and festive times courtesy of its numerous distractions and drink deals. For instance, it's hard to stay sour when buxom bartenders are serving you such specials as $10 beer buckets (featuring five bottles of domestic brews like Coors and Budweiser) and $3 well drinks every day. Once you've picked a drink, head for the front half of the establishment to partake in some live music. A large stage for bands and an even larger red and blue mural of a fiddler crab occupy one corner of the bar, while another wall is covered from floor to ceiling with various flyers and posters from previous gigs by local rock and hip-hop groups. Meanwhile, the back room is dominated by games of skill, including billiards, shuffleboard, and arcade units. Try not to frown if you end up losing to your friends, however, as you might disrupt Crabby Don's happy vibe. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Crescent Ballroom

    Crescent Ballroom

    308 N. 2nd Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85003
    602-716-2222

http://www.crescentphx.com Charlie Levy’s stylish venue and nightspot has earned a rarified aura amongst both music fans and hipsters alike thanks to its many amenities geared towards concertgoers, as well as a posh atmosphere and a distinctive lineup of nightly shows. The Crescent’s main room boasts bleacher-like stadium seating along the back wall, which allows patrons a clear view of whatever nationally known art rock tastemakers, indie-folk troubadours, or Pitchfork favorites happen to be gracing the stage without ever having to jockey for position amidst a typically packed house. Not that there’s ever a bad seat to be had, as choice acoustics and a primo sound system ensure that every single note is crystal clear. Meanwhile, the Crescent’s urbane bar and lounge out front offers a candlelit milieu where scenesters, bon vivants, and urbanites quaff luxe libations, trade the latest gossip, or partake in free performances by local DJs and musicians. • Cruisin

    Cruisin' 7th

    3702 N. 7th St. Phoenix, AZ 85014
    602-212-9888

http://www.cruisin7th.net A few things differentiate Cruisin' 7th from other local gay bars -- a complete lack of posturing and its significant cross-dressing clientele. It's not unusual to see female illusionists and other practitioners of the drag lifestyle sporting their finest frocks at the CenPho club, whether they're participating in the Tuesday karaoke night or witnessing one of the various revues or male stripper shows that go on throughout the week. It's the kind of place where anything goes -- as long as you're respectful and play nice with others. As one regular aptly describes this "island of misfit toys," it is where anyone can feel safe and let loose, regardless of their particular kink or sexual orientation. "If you don't fit in anywhere else, you'll fit in here," as they say. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
