Big Fish Pub

The largish stage located off to the side of this landmark bar and music venue has been graced by plenty of big bands over the years.
Flicka's

Flicka's

Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

  • The Funny Farm

    The Funny Farm

    4270 W. Thomas Road Phoenix, AZ 85019
    602-269-0686

You won't find any madmen or mental patients sharing spirits inside this West Valley cocktail lounge, just an interesting mix of neighborhood drinkers and local Latinos. The Valley is a massive melting pot of Hispanic and Anglo cultures, and the Funny Farm is a prime spot to witness cultural commingling. The Farm once functioned as a cozy corner dive bar but has since evolved into a discoteca and lounge, providing patrons with the best of both worlds. Dollar bills are stapled above the bar, as they are in many a watering hole; only at this bar, those bank notes are scribbled with regulars' names and salacious sayings en español. Virgin Mary statues and other Catholic trinkets are arranged on a corner shelf next to vintage beer signs, and the jukebox contains both cumbias and classic rock hits. The señorita servers also pop the tops off such cervezas as Tecate and old-fashioned American suds such as Budweiser. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Funny World

    Funny World

    1217 E. Madison St. Phoenix, AZ 85034
    602-283-5040

http://www.facebook.com/funnyworldphoenix If you haven't attended a show at this tiny gallery and music venue housed in a ramshackle CenPho residence, better get a move on. That's because in all likelihood, Funny World probably won’t exist by the time that summer rolls around. It's owner, the curiously named Space Alien Donald, claims that the property is slated to be scooped up and razed by the City of Phoenix in the spring to make way for a parking lot. In the meantime, however, local musicians, bands, and spoken word artists have been filling Funny World's short lifespan with plenty of gigs. Art rockers, funky folk guitarists, and various purveyors of weird sounds typically perform in the living room in front of a Babar bed sheet covering the windows while the audience sits of thrift store sofas or cops a squat on the floor. In between sets, they gather in the kitchen to drink coffee or watch the owner bust out with some raps and rhymes while dressed in costume. Sounds like just another funny night at Funny World. • FuNuGyz Sports Grill

    FuNuGyz Sports Grill

    8378 W. Thunderbird Road Peoria, AZ 85381
    623-487-1271

http://www.myspace.com/385639978 Here's a fun game you and your pals can play as you make the drive out to FuNuGyz: place a few bets on how exactly the name is pronounced. Fun-you-guys? Few-new-guys? Foo-noo-geez? The bartenders may roll their eyes if you ask, but what service-industry employee hasn't had to suffer the whims of ownership every now and then? There are plenty of television screens to distract you from the answer, and a large crowd of folks willing to rhapsodize about FuNuGyz's massive wings (especially on Monday's 25-cent wing night). Spend a little time there and you'll start to feel like a Glendale regular in no time, wagering wings on the sporting events. The chili fries and around-the-clock breakfast menu are both culinary charms, but you can also sign up for Kickers Mixed Martial Arts classes, a great way to work off the sips and snacks. • Furia Musical

    Furia Musical

    1810 E. McDowell Road Phoenix, AZ 85006
    602-252-7900

Like a mash-up of reception hall and dive bar, Furia Musical is a trippy dancing and drinking scene decked out in mirrors and a black-and-white checkerboard floor. Crazy-loud Latin music blasts its way out of a powerful sound system, pulsating past an illuminated crescent moon that hangs over the dance floor, chairs and tables draped in black cloth, and up to a small, bright corner bar where old-school amigos down a dizzying array of cheap beer and cocktails from friendly barkeeps. A big-screen TV sits in the corner of the dance area while a second room (separated by Roman columns and white sheer curtains) houses two pool tables, a jukebox, and a vending machine selling bottled waters wrapped with a pack of smokes for eight bucks. If select nights of live bands, DJs, and concursos de tubo (pole-dancing contests) don't get the heart pumping, try a trip to one of the Furia's restrooms. The men's is like a closet of urinals, and in the ladies', you've got five stalls, one curtain, and two seats. Sure it's a little freaky, but at Furia Musical, it's all in good fun.
