Wedged between a hair salon and a vintage auto repair shop, this neighborhood hideaway on the edge of Arcadia has been serving up grub and suds for more than a decade now. Known especially for its hearty wings, daily dinner specials like two-for-one burgers, and other offerings within the realm of American pub-style eats, the grill at J.T.’s (shorthand for owner John Taylor) is located behind the bar, providing much-needed space in the tiny, dimly lit room filled entirely from floor to ceiling with treasures symbolizing the owner’s three loves: sports, Marilyn Monroe, and the Rolling Stones. This divey drinking den’s typically home to a lively bunch and a raucous, convivial vibe on most nights, with Arcadians providing patronage to longtime barkeeps, gulping down any of the nine beers on tap with a new-found friend, or inquiring about J.T., the “grumpy old man” whose reputation’s as fiery as his famous wings. http://www.jackrabbitaz.com An ultra-upscale hotspot with a line out the front door, the Jackrabbit Lounge hosts an alluring mix of burlesque dancers, jazz musicians, and talented turntablists every Thursday through Saturday. Shiny-shirted scenesters and fashionistas frequent the joint, making time with the opposite sex and lapping up chic décor dominated by a huge black-and-white photograph of the Chicago skyline behind the main bar. Have fun trying to get inside after midnight. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com/food/jadebar/jadebar.html Perched on the north side of Camelback Mountain amid the luxurious Sanctuary resort, this lounge is as good as any in the Valley to get that we're-not-in-Phoenix-anymore feel. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide a prime view overlooking tony Paradise Valley, and the people-watching view is nearly as good. And, of course, Jade is never better during the magnificent Arizona sunsets, when the sky seems even more beautiful while sitting on Jade's patio with a signature cocktail nearby. Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. daily, and reverse happy hour runs from 10 p.m. to midnight daily. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.jakes-o-mine.com This dusty dive and biker bar may be situated on the extreme outskirts of the East Valley, but it's well worth the drive. Stop by the Apache Junction establishment and you'll be greeted by a long line of shiny motorcycles parked outside the front entrance. Inside, Jake's O Mine is typically filled with local hawg heads and their ladies, who pound drinks at its large bar or shoot some stick on the three billiards tables. Penny beers are available on Thursdays and various dollar drink specials are offered throughout the rest of the week. If you've got a hankering for down-home music or Southern-fried rock, various good ol' boy bands and country musicians do the pickin'-and-grinnin' thing on the weekends. Or if you're feeling brave, get a little ink to go along with your drink courtesy of the in-house tattoo artist who gets under the skin of patrons four nights a week. http://www.jayscocktails.com Talk about old school. Jay's Cocktail Lounge has been around since 1955, moving to its current location in 1977. With dark paneling, brickwork, and wrought-iron scrollwork that weaves its way around the bar from the ceiling, the interior of this cash-only dive could have easily doubled as the bar in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown. Low-key locals hang out at leather-edged tables where the clacking of billiard balls, 1950s rock 'n' roll on the jukebox, and the occasional bleeping of the Galaga game compete with the sound of blaring TV sets. The bartenders are both friendly and cool, serving up $2 PBRs and nightly drink deals during Man Night Mondays and Surprise Saturdays. And with a turtle tank, animal rescue fund jar, and a bowl of kibble set out for the stray cat that's been hanging around, Jay's Cocktail Lounge is a classic with a heart of gold. http://www.jerseystavern.com A first-rate microbrewery accompanied by pub grub. The Gila Gold Pale Ale and Knotty Amber are especially well-crafted suds. Pizza and green chile are some of the dishes you can wash down. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
Here's an example of Jimbo's hospitality: Each morning, you're served a free breakfast with the purchase of a drink, and it can come as a total surprise, as the waitress slides up a full plate of eggs, sausage, hash browns, and toast. It's just brought out to you without asking, like the complimentary hot wings served Monday through Friday afternoons. The view from outside is deceptively small; enter and you'll find more space than you bargained for, as the management has been expanding for the past few years. The bar wraps around a corner to reveal five pool tables, dart boards, a shuffleboard, televisions every foot or so, and three projection screens. The abundance of TVs and a DirecTV League Pass make the staff receptive to game requests, and for a scant $10-$15, you can lounge in Jimbo's all day, well fed and enjoying $1 domestics in the early afternoon. http://www.margaritavilleinglendale.com Valley Parrotheads, rejoice! Jimmy Buffett has stationed an outpost of his well-known Margaritaville franchise in the desert. This tropical-themed bar, a nod to one of Buffet's better-known songs, serves up its namesake well. Actually, there are over twenty frozen and blended concoctions on the menu. But if booze in a blender isn't your cup of tea (or, ahem, tequila), the bar has plenty of premium brews to choose from, including the house beer, Land Shark Lager, which became so popular they now sell it at supermarkets. Stop by on Saturday nights for live music, and in between sets the band might just help you look for that lost shaker of salt. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.joesgrotto.com Joe Grotto (yes, his real name) has provided a North Phoenix haven for local bands for more than a decade now with his bar and live music venue. Be they fire-breathing death metal artists, long-haired screamo types, costumed tribute acts, or just plain old hard rockers, Joe will always offer space on his stage. Two weekly open mic nights also draw all sorts of new blood to the joint consistently. The interior looks the way an old-school rock club should, with one wall covered in mirrors, spots of graffiti here and there, and various fliers clinging to the walls.
