A longtime favorite of the Phoenix gay scene, Apollo's is the kind of bar where you can have a few beers and hang with a diverse selection of drinkers.
Big Fish Pub

Big Fish Pub

The largish stage located off to the side of this landmark bar and music venue has been graced by plenty of big bands over the years.

Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

  • Scoreboard Tavern

    Scoreboard Tavern

    2831 N. 35th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85009

Whatever visions come to mind when hearing the name Scoreboard Tavern, leave them behind. This was once a watering hole for athletic-minded West Valley residents but is now a hangout for neighborhood Hispanics, complete with a shrine to the Virgin Mary in the corner. With a sunken bar trimmed in blue leather and mirrors running down the length of one wall, the Scoreboard Tavern is a little joint that's big enough to hold a couple of pool tables and a projection TV showing the latest juego de fútbol - the only sport that's actually broadcast in this sports bar. Blue-collar regulars kick back banda music as it pulsates from the jukebox, with the occasional track from The Eagles tossed in when a gringo wanders through the doors. Drink specials? No aquí. Cheap bottles of Bud Light are the favorite. Twisting off of the cap is the responsibility of the drinkers, not the barkeep. And if hunger strikes in the Scoreboard Tavern's cash-only confines, hit the ATM in the corner and grab a bag of dried shrimp bits or, better yet, visit the taco truck across the street for un burrito delicioso. • Seamus McCaffrey

Seamus McCaffrey's Irish Pub & Restaurant

    18 W. Monroe St. Phoenix, AZ 85003
602-253-6081 This place is about way more than Irish beer, me boy-o. Oh, sure. Seamus offers sandwiches and salads along with the usual super happy hour specials and such. But how about this: This authentic Irish pub is the home of Arizona's all-time best selection of Scotch and Irish whiskey in the state. If it's something other than a liquid diet you're looking for, pub food is served round the clock. Try the Shepherd's Pie or the crunchy-fried fish and chips. We go back for the corned beef and cabbage, served with boiled potatoes and just like Gramma O'Hara used to make. Live music most weekend nights is a nice side, but we also dig the company of the friendly, chatty staff the rest of the week. Friendly atmosphere and tasty pub food-what more can one ask for? • Sevens Lounge

    Sevens Lounge

    7941 W. Glendale Ave. Glendale, AZ 85303

The atmosphere at Sevens Lounge depends on the time of day. The West Valley bar and grill opens up in the afternoon on weekdays with various food and drink specials, but after dark, it becomes a place to grab some spirits with friends and catch up on the latest gossip. Things tend to get wilder, noisier, and more crowded on the weekends, as folks gather to shoot pool, play darts, or clown around on the boxing game in the corner. Depending on the mood of the owners, you might also find live bands of the rock and cover band variety, as well as the occasional DJ spinning hip-hop and Top 40 tunes. Drink deals are in abundance (such as $3 draft beers and well cocktails) and the eager bartenders are as generous with their pours as they are with their high-fives. • Shade

    7277 E. Camelback Road Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-970-2100 This indoor/outdoor lounge next to the W Scottsdale's second-floor pool is decked out with lavish brown and white couches, scattered amidst Mediterranean-inspired décor and a fully stocked bar armed with a classy staff tending to whatever alcohol need may arise. A funky blue-tinged waterfall is located behind Shade's bar and ripples with trickling water that is usually drowned out by the hum of conversation from the stylish crowd that congregates here. Nearby is the hotel's Sunset Beach, consisting of a swatch of white sand populated by breezy cabanas and daybeds, as well as color-changing lights and blazing fire pits encased in onyx marble. A number of upscale parties and affairs have taken place here, featuring such hepcat DJs as Soulman and Paul Oakenfold. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Shady

2701 E. Indian School Road Phoenix, AZ 85016

An unpretentious bar and lounge with an English flair, Shady's is a place to chillax while sampling a few pints of Bass or Guinness, shoot some billiards, watch cult movies on the TVs, or converse with your fellow urbanites. It's got a living room-type feel with a fireplace stocked with candles and some of the most comfortable black leather chairs we've ever sat on. Owned by Brad Henrich (the cat behind Scottsdale's TT Roadhouse), it also has one of the most fly jukeboxes in the Valley, stocked with a cool cross-section of CDs ranging from Al Green and Richard Cheese to The Smiths, and others. • Shenanigans Bar & Grill

    Shenanigans Bar & Grill

    2244 W. Bell Road Phoenix, AZ 85023
602-863-3725 From the outside, this two-level tavern might appear to be just another humdrum storefront at a quiet strip mall in north Phoenix, but once you get inside, it's a different story altogether. There are plenty of amusements at this rocking watering hole, whether it's jersey-wearing sports fans gathering to root on their particular team, wanna-be singers grabbing the microphone during weekly karaoke nights on Fridays and Saturdays, or the occasional live band. • Shotgun Betty

Shotgun Betty's Rock & Roll Saloon

    7330 E. Stetson Drive Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Get a slice of Southern-fried fun in the heart of Scottsdale at this honky tonk-like drinkery that invokes the spirit of those bumpkin bars you see out in the sticks (complete with peanut shells on the floor). It's like Old Town meets the Old West as country and classic rock hits boom throughout the wood-paneled saloon as tight-bodied waitresses wearing Daisy Dukes and barely-there T-shirts wrap themselves around stripper poles atop the bar. Besides all the booful babes doing the bump 'n' grind, the place also boasts a vintage Harley Davidson chopper in the center of the bar, gaudy cow skulls, and a couple posters of Johnny Cash. • The Shout! House

    The Shout! House

    6770 N. Sunrise Blvd. Glendale, AZ 85305
623-772-1500 West Valley nightlife isn't exactly known for its variety. Sure, you'll find plenty of sports bars and dank dives, but hip neighborhood bars and edgy dance clubs are quite the rare beast. Fortunately, The Shout! House offers a nice change of pace. You'll find a rotating cast of pianists tickling the ivories Tuesday through Sunday night. The dueling pianos offer up all the classic bar tunes - we're looking at you, Journey - while patrons can enjoy one of The Shout! House's nightly drink specials and grub from their full menu. You'll hear covers of bands as disparate as The Moody Blues and Tenacious D, so it's likely that everyone in your party will probably end up screeching along at some point. Oh, and if you've got your heart set on hearing something special you can always text a request - no need for the dollar bill. And, yes, they'll probably play Billy Joel's "Piano Man," but only if you ask them nicely. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Showroom at Talking Stick Resort

9800 E. Indian Bend Rd Scottsdale, AZ 85250

  • SideBar

    1514 N. 7th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85007
602-254-1646 Boasting retro-futuristic swank, a relaxed upscale vibe, and a staggering selection of beer and wine, the always-stylish SideBar has become one of downtown Phoenix's premier drinking destinations. Perched on the upper floor of the historic brick building that once housed the Emerald Lounge and the original location of the Lost Leaf, the spot features a swinging '60s cocktail vibe and décor that was mapped out by renowned designer Judith Testani (of Olive & Ivy fame). A mix of mid-century retro and more modern elements -- including the programmable light wall and Paul Christiansen-like ceiling lamps -- SideBar's digs are matched in beauty by the precision cocktails served at the funky-looking illuminated bar. Try such tasty concoctions as the White Rabbit and the Psychedelic and see if you agree. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

2980 S. Alma School Road Chandler, AZ 85286

  • The Silver Pony

    The Silver Pony

    620 W. Dobbins Road Phoenix, AZ 85041
602-268-1318 From the moment you walk through the door of this friendly and laid-back South Phoenix country dive, you're treated as a regular. Outgoing bartenders welcome patrons with a hearty "howdy" and serve up bottles of Bud without attitude. The crowd is equally affable, even on a raucous weekend night. Harley-Davidson types knock back a few beers and play darts, while blue-collar workers from the neighborhood eagerly shoot pool with vaqueros dressed in Mexican cowboy wear. Boot-scootin' bands, such as Urban Country, provide an upbeat soundtrack on Fridays and Saturdays as customers do their two-step thing on the dance floor. There's also a baseball bat hanging behind the bar, which, the bartenders joke, is for patrons who might "get a little out of hand. But frankly, it's doubtful the staff ever needs to wield the weapon, because the vibe here is plenty amiable. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Skeptical Chymist

    Skeptical Chymist

    15668 N. Pima Road Scottsdale, AZ 85260
480-609-8677 Looking very much like a kind of place you'd find on the Emerald Isle, Skeptical Chymist is a charming place resembling an old apothecary with rustic wooden furnishings and hundreds of books lining the walls. Besides having an abundance of the obligatory Guinness on tap, you can get ice cold pints of Harp, Bass, Newcastle and numerous other import drafts, as well as other Irish booze and brews. Several specialty cocktails, like the Chymist Royal (a concoction of Bushmills, apple liqueur, and ginger ale) are also on the menu. It's definitely good for what ails you. • Skin Cabaret

    Skin Cabaret

    1137 N. Scottsdale Road Scottsdale, AZ 85257
480-425-7546 There’s a certain amount throwback class and gentility to a night out at Skin Cabaret. A dapper doorman was lightning quick with a Zippo lighter for smoker outside of this south Scottsdale club. The dancers, some sporting Betty Page’s signature black bangs, are required to wear pasties. (It’s thanks to a rather archaic-minded law that prevents fully topless entertainment passed back in 2007 and championed by onetime Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross in an attempt to get strip parlors to vacate the city.) Plus, the bartenders gave out old school pours with some real moxie, which made the two-drink minimum easier to swallow. Thankfully, the actual adult entertainment taking place on the platforms at Skin isn’t some tease act out of the Don Draper era. As longtime resident DJ Dave Wave spins up music videos for the latest Top 40 and rock hits play on two video screen, dancers do some uninhibited with their almost nearly naked…um, endowments that would probably make your granpappy’s face go bright beet red. • Skip & Jan

    Skip & Jan's

7700 S. Priest Drive Tempe, AZ Tempe, AZ 85284
480-598-8611 It's hard to tell from the street, but Skip & Jan's is huge. It might not look it from the outside, but this Tempe sports bar is large enough to house a fully-stocked kitchen, dozens of TVs, dart boards, arcades, and a station for off-track betting. Not to mention a cavernous pool hall, with tables stretching as far as the eye can see. The staff is courteous and friendly, and regulars are nice, too. The bar features live music, karaoke every Tuesday night and plenty of drink specials to wet gamblers' whistles. This west-Tempe hub has plenty to offer the wandering sportsman. • Skippers Lounge

    Skippers Lounge

    6124 N. 43rd Ave. Glendale, AZ 85301

A favorite of both neighborhood residents and salt-of-the-earth barflies for years, Skippers is tucked away next to the intriguingly named Roman Tax Service in a red-and-white mini-strip. The bar offers Glendale denizens a place for drinks, karaoke, and live music. Such bands as The Bank and Fool's Life are regulars here, performing rock 'n' roll hits on the weekends. Watching NASCAR is another big pastime here (as evidenced by the posters on the wall) as are the thrice-weekly "kamikaze karaoke" sessions. As the event's name portends, singers can occasionally become a little wild when belting out standards and popular songs, so keep a firm hold of your drink in case the current mic-wielder bumps into you while belting out Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer." • Sky High Hookah Lounge

    Sky High Hookah Lounge

    7802 N. 27th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85051
602-841-5380 Fragrant smells waft throughout the dark hall at Sky High Hookah Lounge, with flavored shisha tobacco smoke billowing from towering hookah pipes. The hookah jockeys at the front counter are attentive but not intrusive, periodically shifting the burning coals over the bowls packed with flavorful combinations of slow-burning, molasses-dipped tobacco. It's a great venue to enjoy the company of friends and family in a fun, calm atmosphere and the owner invites everyone to experience their excellent customer service. The full service smoke shop offers a wide variety of tobacco products as well as accessories. And they've got a wide selection of tobacco flavors including Sex on the Beach, Blue Mist, Bubblegum, Black Licorice, Double Apple and more, all of which you can enjoy while their house DJ, pumps music through the lounge.
