A longtime favorite of the Phoenix gay scene, Apollo's is the kind of bar where you can have a few beers and hang with a diverse selection of drinkers.
Big Fish Pub

Big Fish Pub

The largish stage located off to the side of this landmark bar and music venue has been graced by plenty of big bands over the years.
Flicka's

Flicka's

Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

  • Swizzle Inn

    Swizzle Inn

    5835 N. 16th St. Phoenix, AZ 85016
    602-277-7775

We’re at least 300-odd miles from the shore in Phoenix, so the concept of some kitschy dockside bar native to port cities is a foreign notion to us landlubbers. Except when we drop anchor for an evening with the scurvy dogs at Swizzle Inn, that is. This notorious north central Phoenix landmark of a maritime bent is the kinda place where vintage diving helmets, surfboards, and depth gauges are objets d'art, and a large photograph of a great white hangs above the pool table. Its inky eyes seemingly follow us when we wade through a crowd three deep to sample the sea of spirits available behind the bar. Conversation tends to resemble a roar as patrons often shout to be heard over the blaring jukebox, especially when it’s playing a crowd favorite like Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” You can even hear it from your car while parking, which indicates that another memorable night at the Swizzle is on your horizon. • T.G.I. Friday

    T.G.I. Friday's

    401 E. Jefferson St. Phoenix, AZ 85004-2438
    602-462-3506

http://www.tgifridays.com/home/welcome.aspx Nearly sixty years after the first T.G.I. Friday's opened in New York City, this venerable chain of almost 500 locations is still working the "singles" concept, advertising itself as a low-key meeting spot for men and women on the prowl, and emphasizing its drinks menu more than most chain restaurants. Many modern diners may not realize that Friday's earned its reputation as a swinger's paradise; according to a 1973 story in Newsweek, it was founded by an unmarried perfume salesman who figured that opening a restaurant with "Tiffany lamps and mod waiters" would be a good way to meet the stewardesses who lived in his neighborhood. Whether his quest was successful is unclear; either way, Friday's is today better known for inventing menu items such as the Pizzadilla—a signature creation that's equal parts Italian pizza and Mexican quesadilla. Phoenix diners, and pretty much everyone else in the country, also know all about Friday's baby back ribs, thanks to an aggressive and alliterative ad campaign that ran for years. • Tailgate Sports Bar & Grill

    Tailgate Sports Bar & Grill

    930 W. Broadway Road Tempe, AZ 85282
    480-894-2337

A "no sniveling" sign hangs adjacent to the bar at the Tailgate, which pretty much sums up the attitude of this Tempe spot: no nonsense, no frills, and no bull. Order something domestic as you saddle up to the bar, joining mid-day regulars who tend to drink their lunch (although daily food specials are also available). Free pool is offered on Sundays, all manner of sporting events are broadcast on 10 televisions, and both dartboards and arcade games are handy (in case the exploits of the local teams become too depressing to watch). The Tailgate, which also features live music on its stage, is frequented by the kinds of salt-of-the-earth clientele who wander over from neighboring industrial centers for an after-work pick-me-up. Whining about workplace woes is kept at an absolute minimum, however, as the aforementioned signage dictates. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Tallyho Cocktail Lounge

    Tallyho Cocktail Lounge

    8479 E. McDonald Drive Scottsdale, AZ 85250
    480-991-7538

Time has seemingly ground to a halt inside the Tallyho as the look of this North Scottsdale neighborhood dive hasn't changed much since it debuted back in 1969. Over the past four decades, longtime owner Lois Richards has stubbornly held onto such kitschy touches as the stained glass windows, red vinyl booths, and wrought iron fixtures, refusing to change with the times. It's something of a keen throwback to the era when Bill Close read the nightly news, providing patrons with a trip through time to go along with their drinks. Although the Tallyho is equally steadfast in refraining from having a happy hour ("We've always been happy here from open to close," quips one female bartender), well drinks are only $3.50 and most bottled beers go for $3. Sadly, there aren't any old school brews like Hamm's or Löwenbräu available. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Taste of Tops

    Taste of Tops

    403 W. University Drive Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-967-5643

http://www.topsliquors.com Sitting pretty next to its big sis operation Tops Liquors, the pint-sized Taste of Tops is a cushy, lounge-like addition to the famed alcohol emporium located at University Drive and Farmer Avenue. And much like at the original Tops, it's all about the alcohol. The small, inviting bar features a dozen different draft taps of specialty beers, wine by the glass (or by the bottle if purchased at the store, with a small additional corking fee), and a row of refrigerators stocked with row after row of delicious-looking microbrew and craft beers. Local artists switch out their work on the walls each month, which always keeps the look of the place fresh. Comfy couches, low booths and rich wooden chairs create a mellow vibe for hours of laidback drinking and unrushed hanging. When a no-fuss night out is in order, Taste of Tops is the answer. • Tavern Grille

    Tavern Grille

    8880 E. Via Linda Scottsdale, AZ 85258
    480-614-5254

http://www.taverngrillescottsdale.com There's nothing quite like cozying up in a woodsy tavern on a cold day and embracing your inner glutton. Good luck finding a day like that here in the Valley, but you can capture the same ambiance at Scottsdale's Tavern Grille, right off the 101. Blue collar regular Joes and Scottsdale suburbanites dine on pub grub and casually toss peanut shells on the floor. Seriously. The Tavern welcomes it. Sip one (or more) of the bar's dozens of on tap brews as you watch the game on one of the spot's many flatscreens. Save some cash from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. everyday at happy hour, with $2 longneck bottles, $2.25 drafts and $8 pitchers as you enjoy a soundtrack of classic rock tunes. Those very rock stars peer down from portraits in approval. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • The Tavern on Mill

    The Tavern on Mill

    404 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-967-5886

http://www.tavernonmill.com Described by its owners as a "high volume" hotspot, the Tavern more than lives up to that slogan. Talented turntablists loudly blast out Top 40 and rock three nights a week. Meanwhile, close to 40 high-def widescreen TVs (more than any other bar on Mill) broadcast music videos, sports, and all those extra satellite channels you can't quite bring yourself to splurge on. The interior bar area and the outdoor patios are both brimming with ASU coeds, meaning there's plenty of eye candy. Oh, and they have daily drink deals, too, like $2 Coronas and Pacificos on Tuesdays and 22-ounce "big-ass" beers for $3 on Wednesdays. Those deals offer value just as voluminous as everything else at the Tavern, one of Mill Avenue's signature establishments. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Taxi Inn

    Taxi Inn

    2339 E. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ 85034
    602-275-0406

The drink selection at the Taxi Inn is limited to beer and wine, but that doesn't seem to matter to its patrons. Everyone's having too good a time soaking in the dive bar ambiance and sucking down Pacificos and Tecate to care about the fact that the only mixed drink being served are Micheladas (a.k.a. suds spiced up with tomato juice and Clamato in the style of a Bloody Mary). Located a stone's throw from Sky Harbor International Airport (hence its name), this dope dive doesn't see many travelers stopping off before their flight, but instead is the stomping ground of both the blue-collar crowd and a mostly Hispanic clientele. The signs outside promise pool, and Taxi Inn delivers with three billiards tables. Things really get popping, however, when neighborhood folks come out to catch UFC events, boxing matches, and -- especially -- soccer games. Keeping the Taxi Inn in mind during major events like World Cup is a must if you want to joyously bellow out "GOAL!" with fellow fútbol fans. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Teakwoods Tavern & Grill

    Teakwoods Tavern & Grill

    5965 W. Ray Road Chandler, AZ 85226
    480-961-0945

http://www.teakwoodstavern.com It may be located in a quiet Chandler strip mall, but Teakwood's isn't your run-of-the-mill sports bar. The cozy, casual atmosphere with tons o' flat screens make it an ideal spot to watch the game. Sounds good, right? It's also a great place to make a mess. Buckets of peanuts grace each table, and they really seem to want you to throw the shells directly on the ground. Go ahead, someone else will clean it up, just like at the stadium. The extensive menu of bar food leans toward such Midwestern classics as cheese curds and meatloaf, which make hearty alternatives to their award-winning wings. Drink specials every night of the week and pitchers of ice cold beer make Teakwood's a local favorite. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Teakwoods Tavern & Grille

    Teakwoods Tavern & Grille

    151 E. Williamsfield Road Gilbert, AZ 85296
    480-899-8325

http://www.teakwoodstavern.com There's a certain down-home spirit to this casual, family-friendly bar and restaurant. A cartoon moose greets you at the entrance, abandoned peanut shells cover the floors, and rustic décor makes it feel like a place the Griswold family would stop by on one of Chevy Chase's family vacations. Teakwoods' kitchen serves up hearty bar food, including crowd favorites like burgers and wings and more unique offerings like lavosh. Sport your favorite jersey, order some on-special brew (there are drink specials every day of the week) and engage in laid-back lounging with a group of pals while you cheer on your favorite team. Tempe Improv Comedy Theatre

    480-921-9877

http://www.tempeimprov.com Renowned as one of the biggest comedy clubs in the nation, the Improv has featured a star-studded array of blockbuster comics over the decades. Names like Jerry Seinfeld, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Schimmel, and Dave Attell have all graced the venue's stage and have even taped specials to air on HBO or Comedy Central. Gigs usually run all weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, and there's typically a two-item minimum for shows. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Tempe Tavern

    Tempe Tavern

    1810 E. Apache Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-794-1706

http://www.tempetavern.com Tempe Tavern oozes Arizona history. The historic building, built in 1918, used to be known as the White Dairy Barn and preserves the many of its original features, including exposed-concrete columns, door framing, and cobblestone surfaces. The bar used to house Tempe favorite Murphy's Pub and the New Oxbow Tavern, and those aren't the only ties to clubs of the past: the (non-working, unfortunately) phone booth used to belong in Valley favorite Buzz Funbar. The bar doesn't solely lean on fond memories, though. The kitschy, bottle-cap-covered walls by the bathroom, vintage beer signs, and full stage all point to a bar that has an identity all its own, with an old-school, relaxed feel. Located just off the Apache/McClintock light-rail stop and across the street from the luxury housing of the Grigio Metro apartment complex, the bar points to a bright future for a section of Tempe that is rife with old memories and ripe for new ones.
