http://www.timfinnegans.com The protagonist of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake was brought back to life after whiskey was spilled on his corpse, and Tim Finnegan's Irish Restaurant & Pub shares its name with the book's central character. There's no magic whiskey here, but there are plenty of life-enriching pints of Guinness and snifters of Jameson to go around. Overhead, a soundtrack of The Pogues and other Irish bands brings an aural taste of Ireland to the Southwest, accompanying the bartender as he speaks with a thick Irish accent while stomping across the wooden floor. The pub is a good place to view both types of football: New York Jets paraphernalia hangs next to soccer jerseys on the walls. Located next to Metrocenter, Finnegan's offers a hidden spot for parents to sneak away for drinks while their kids get tuckered out at neighboring Castles N' Coasters. Scenesters love dropping by this strip mall drinking den on the south side of Mill Avenue, as do college kids, frat cats, local musicians, or anyone looking for an alcoholic escape. What's the appeal? Cheap booze ($2.50 bottled domestics and $6 pitchers) for one, as well as plenty of cheap thrills (including numerous arcade games and pool tables), and plenty of opportunities for people-watching. It's also spacious, with a slew of comfy booths and couches where you can perch with friends while soaking up the shabby-chic dive atmosphere and earning hipster cred. http://www.tiltedkilt.com Complimenting a sports bar for its televisions is akin to complimenting a supermodel for her looks - it's redundant and unnecessary. To paraphrase the classic Chris Rock routine, "Sports bars are supposed to have big TVs!" That being said, the boob tubes at this popular chain's south Tempe location deserve special mention, simply because of their sheer size. We're talking an HDTV projector with a screen that literally stretches from floor to ceiling, giving a whole new meaning to the term "larger than life." Then again, that's pretty much the standard at Tilted Kilt, from the oversize pint glasses to the monstrous 10-ounce hamburger patties (yes, a double is available). And who needs pitchers when you can order a beer tube? The tubes come in 70- and 100-ounce sizes, basically providing a tap right at your table. Don't forget to bring some friends, though, because you'll need some help finishing one. In keeping with the bar's Celtic theme, the 17th of every month is deemed "St. Practice Day," with green beer and drink specials to keep you in shape for the real Saint Patty's throwdown in March. http://www.tobysmesa.com You don't have to be a country music fan-or even a fan of Mr. Keith's-to enjoy the down-home cooking and two-stepping to high-energy live bands at this popular eatery and watering hole. Fifty plasma screen TVs help fill this 20,000 square-foot bar with sports fans and music enthusiasts and pretty much anyone hungry for good grub and a fine time. A glass-enclosed VIP lounge and not one but two private indoor barns are great for special occasions; the rest of the time, table service will get you some of the best burgers, chops, and steaks (we like ours chicken-fried, with a side of gravy, macaroni and cheese, and fried okra) in town. Distinctive starters include the artichoke and spinach dip with red, white, and blue corn chips, and the chicken fingers are also memorable and tasty. Pull on your boots and head to Toby's for down-home eating that'll have you crooning. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.tommybahama.com The Bahamas experience weather that's drastically different than we do here in the Valley, but with a little air conditioning and rum, Tommy Bahama's Restaurant and Bar recreates an island atmosphere in an upscale, yet casual setting. If you're looking for an excuse to indulge in a piña colada while shopping at Scottsdale's Kierland Commons, look no further. And they're not going to try to sell you Hawaiian shirts, either. Instead, bartenders offer up craft brews, mixed cocktails and a selection of wines, with happy hour (what they call "Island Time") from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day. http://www.tonicaz.com Talk about good for what ails you! Tonic makes us feel better with its laid-back, cool, dark interior and its boutique cocktails like Lemon Meringue Martinis, and once we've worked up some real hunger, Tonic soothes us with one of the most unique tapas menus in town. Tender Steak Bites and marinated chicken wings are a great launch; next, go for the Pita Pizza Trio, rich with cheeses and veggies and crispy-crunchy to boot. Sliders with ranch sauce are delicious and cooked to order, and an ever-changing list of veggie-themed sides makes us feel healthy and happy, too. Eating here is our favorite new medicine. There's a limo parked outside Toso's Sports Grill in Glendale, but don't let that fool you. The folks in here are regular blue-collar types, greeted with hearty salutations by the bartender as they belly up to the bar for a lunchtime drink. The barkeep calls you "sweetie" as you order a domestic and turn your attention to the game on one of the bar's numerous TVs. Toso's is a pigskin fan's hangout (the bartender is more than willing to talk smack about your favorite team) and the Patriot's Fan Club meets in the back room. The bar still has plenty going on during the off-season, with live comedy on Friday night, and UFC specials. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.thetrunkspace.com Populated by a kooky coterie of performers and artists, the Trunk Space has become a haven for nationally touring indie outfits like Quintron and Miss Pussycat, as well as a number of burgeoning local bands. Creating a hipster block on Grand along with the always-popular Bikini Lounge and candy shop/record store Sweets & Beats, this quaint performance space/boutique/espresso bar is a stomping ground for a variety of musicians, artists, and other creative Phoenicians. Since its opening in 2005, a quirky cross-section of comedians, theater troupes, fringe acts, poets, and freakazoids have also graced the venue's tiny stage. https://www.facebook.com/pages/TT-Roadhouse/277715827837 Think all Scottsdale bars are full of throbbing electronic music and frolic fashionistas? Think again. Populated by punks, indie rockers, and bikers alike, TT Roadhouse is where you can enjoy a pint of Stella or Smithwick's, a game of pool, and one of the most killer jukeboxes around (featuring CDs from The Misfits, The Clash, Elvis Costello, and The Specials). Dollar drink specials are available most nights, local bands are known to stage the occasional gig here, and there's plenty of parking for either your Harley or Huffy. http://www.theturfpub.com It doesn't matter what you do to Turf's classic Caesar Salad. You can add chicken, shrimp, tuna, even calamari; it's still one of the best Caesars in town, made with fresh, crisp Romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese grated over homemade croutons and tossed with a perfectly made, lemony dressing. Follow this perfect salad with a traditional boxty, a delicious potato-based, grilled Irish pancake served with homemade soda bread and butter. The chicken boxty offers peppers and mushrooms tossed with chicken in a white wine cream sauce. Bangers and mash or burgers are other inspired options from Turf's gourmet kitchen, from which some pretty amazing meals have come. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.unclebearsbarandgrill.com Whenever we're in the mood to experience some karaoke fun with friends, we head for this East Valley establishment, where singalong action is featured two nights a week. In addition to a full menu of bar food delights, buckets of free peanuts are also available if you'd like a quick snack. Patrons usually discard their shells on the floor, so step carefully when heading to the bathroom between songs. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.unclebearsbarandgrill.com As the old expression goes: "If your dog doesn't like someone, you probably shouldn't either." The folks at Uncle Bear's Bar and Grill have taken the adage to heart, covering the establishment with pictures of pooches and pups. The floor is covered with peanut shells, and each table has a dog bowl filled with them. The place is pleasantly cluttered: In addition to the framed photos of man's best friend, the bar features vintage license plates and maps of Arizona, as well as mounted deer and buffalo heads, surely the bounty of some hunting trip with the dogs. The bar sits in the middle of the room, where you can sip from a variety of microbrews and $3 Bloody Marys on Sunday, as well as a family-friendly menu. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
Nestled into a far corner of the tiny strip mall just across the street from Mesa Community College, Uncle Monkeys exudes a certain level of charm. A cigarette vending machine glows near the door, and a wooden Native American statue stands watch over the jukebox, seemingly offering approval to any listening choices patrons make (word is he's a fan of "Buffalo Soldier"). Established way back in 1981, the bar is cash only, and features karaoke sessions every night starting at 9 p.m. Guitars line the walls alongside various biker paraphernalia, statues of monkeys (natch), and advertisements for the bars ladies night every Tuesday. It's a popular affair, where girls and gals get $2 you-call-it specials on drinks, including the cheekily named "Monkey Wiz" (a special blend of various juices and banana liqueurs). After a few sips, it won't take long to build up the courage to belt out your favorite classic rock anthem for an adoring crowd. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.universityofphoenixstadium.com Standing out amidst the dusty lots and cropland of Glendale’s western end, this silvery gridiron cathedral is where the football faithful flock on certain Sundays in the fall months for every Arizona Cardinals home game. Offering 63,400 seats (expandable up to 72,200 for the playoffs), it also features 88 luxury suites, three posh lounges, and 47 concession stands providing everything from American game-time favorites like hot dogs and wings to local spins on Mexican favorites and barbecue. In addition to being the site of the thrilling victories and tragic defeats of the Arizona Cardinals (more the latter than the former), as well as the annual Fiesta Bowl and two BCS Championships, the stadium has hosted sold-out concerts by The Rolling Stones and U2, a WrestleMania, and SuperBowl XLII in 2008, which featured the New York Giants’ impossible come-from-behind upset of the undefeated New England Patriots. Here’s hoping that won’t be only time the Vince Lombardi trophy is held aloft inside the joint, you hear us, Red Birds? Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.thevenuescottsdale.com Since the Venue hosts a torrent of local and national music acts, the vibe at this Old Town concert hall changes with whoever's taking to its ample stage, adapting its ambiance to fit a variety of styles. One night, a local rock band like Digital Summer might blow out the joint with its melodic sound, and the next, hip-hop legends like Chamillionaire or Rakim might smoke the mic with their furious styles. The billiards area houses three championship-size pool tables, and the balcony overlooking the courtyard functions as a VIP area, complete with a private big-screen TV and fireplace.
