  • Brigett

    Brigett's Last Laugh

17222 N. Cave Creek Road Phoenix, AZ 85032
602-788-0507 Even if it looks like a biker bar, with all those shiny-chrome hogs out front, Brigett's real charm is as one of Phoenix's unsung karaoke capitals. The bar hosts sing-a-long fun seven nights a week, and the songs you'll hear performed are as diverse as the people singing them. There might be a dude with long hair and a flannel shirt singing rock 'n' roll, followed by a middle-aged fellow belting out some chart-topper, followed by a biker babe doing her own kooky thing. Everybody's friendly here, and if you can't be talked into a duet, maybe a game of pool or darts will suffice. Read more about Brigett's Last Laugh >>

  • The British Open Pub

    The British Open Pub

    1334 N. Scottsdale Road Scottsdale, AZ 85257
480-941-4915 Cozy British-themed pub with a fair selection of British and international beers, and some pretty decent English grub: sausage rolls, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and an excellent beef and Guinness pie. Baskets of Wallys -- deep-fried spears of dill pickles -- make for terrific bar food when paired with a cold pint. For a happy ending, look to the dessert menu, offering such blood-sugar-raising delights as bread pudding with Grand Marnier. Read more about The British Open Pub >>

  • BS West

    BS West

    7125 E. Fifth Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-945-9028 BS West is absolutely one of the friendliest clubs you'll ever party at, whether you're bi, gay, straight, or none of the above. Hidden in Scottsdale's back streets (despite its Fifth Avenue address), the party's always pumpin', with enough stud muffins in attendance to make a het fella rethink his sexuality. It's got the feel of a two-story gay frat house in the midst of Scottsdale's party scene, with a 2-4-1 hump day special that makes BS the place to hit on Wednesday nights. But as wild as it can get, BS still retains a neighborly feel, where people aren't afraid to converse with one another, or at least flirt shamelessly. And the bartenders actually seem happy to have your business, unlike at some other places where they make you feel like they're doing you a favor by serving you. BS has been going strong since 1988, and if it stays the way it is, it'll probably be alive and kickin' in 2088. Read more about BS West >>

  • Buffalo Chip Saloon

    Buffalo Chip Saloon

6811 E. Cave Creek Road Cave Creek, AZ 85331
480-488-9118 No, we are not kidding. Buffalo Chip Saloon offers real, live bull riding-on real, live bulls! If you're hankering for a good time away from the sprawl, pardner, head up north to this watering hole situated along Cave Creek's main drag. Cowboys are king here, as evidenced by its country-western dance lessons, and toe-tappin'; performances by the twangy musicians of the Pat James Band throughout the week. An authentic-looking Wagon Camp is also located out back, providing an outdoor bar and dance floor amidst hay bales, fire pits, and old-timey buildings and décor. (The attached restaurant also serves up such tasty vittles as buffalo stew and ribeye steaks.) Bronco-busters and their badonkadonk babes aren't the only patrons here, however, as funky artist types, families, and other Valley refugees come by to play in the arcade or watch twice-weekly professional bull-riding shows. • Bullock

    Bullock's Country Attitudes

2601 W. Bethany Home Road Phoenix, AZ 85017

The karaoke action, which transpires seven nights a week, is a constant presence at Bullock’s, as are enthusiastic crowds that love the longtime bar scene pastime. Regulars holler out nu-metal hits and hip-hop chartbusters along with the usual tear-jerking ballads from a catalog of more than 50,000 songs available. In between turns on the mic, slide up to the bar for a cold one, check out the weird murals on the wall (or the profane grafitti in the restrooms), or just grab a cue from the wall and see how your billiards skills rate on the pool tables. • Bull Shooters Bar & Grill

    Bull Shooters Bar & Grill

    3337 W. Peoria Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85029
602-441-2447 Fancy yourself a pool shark? Seen The Color of Money one too many times? This North Phoenix pool palace has a bevy of billiards tables (38 of 'em, to be exact) on which you can put your skills to the test. Pool prodigies sporting jeans and black concert tee shirts bring their custom cues to shoot both some stick and the breeze. Over in the adjacent game room and smoking lounge, however, there's Texas Hold'em, shuffleboard, a hockey game, and other distractions. The bar features 11 brews on tap, 36 different imports and domestics in bottle form, and enough daily specials (such as $2 PBRs) to afford you enough liquid courage to try your hand at the weekend karaoke. • Cactus Jack

    Cactus Jack's Ahwatukee Tavern

    4747 E. Elliot Road Ahwatukee, AZ 85044
480-753-4733 We started coming to Cactus Jack's for an after-work beer, but soon discovered the delicious food specials and now head here for early evening suppers. And what suppers! On Wednesdays, a two-topping pizza is only four bucks-talk about help getting over hump day! Speaking of pizza, Friday night is the night for Cactus Jack's All You Can Eat Pizza Smorgasbord-delicious, hot pies and side salads fresh from the kitchen and sure to please even the less-inebriated. Every meal at this cool club is accompanied by a drink special, so be sure to ask the bartender as you arrive-hopefully with an appetite. Read more about Cactus Jack's Ahwatukee Tavern >>

  • Cactus Moon Sports Grill

    Cactus Moon Sports Grill

    1017 N. Dobson Road Mesa, AZ 85201
480-833-2226 There's no shortage of places to catch a game in the East Valley, but forget about finding a seat if you don't stake out a spot well before kickoff. That's when we head to Cactus Moon. Because whether we show up in the first half or the bottom of the ninth, there's always room for us and our beer. We'll admit we were skeptical of a sports bar in the Mesa Riverview shopping complex, but there's nothing corporate about this family-run operation. Even after the final whistle blows, we stick around for when they clear the floor for late-night fun. Our favorite is Thursday's country-Western theme. Read more about Cactus Moon Sports Grill >>

  • The Caravan

    The Caravan

    4835 N. 15th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85015

When there's a sign in the bar that says "restrooms for customers only," you know you're in a dive bar. When there are other signs that read "no drinking other people's beer," you know you're at The Caravan. Situated next to a smoke shop and convenience store and adorned with an exterior mural by painter Joerael Elliott that features elements of Hopi, Apache, Navajo, and Pima iconography, The Caravan welcomes its guests into a cavernous, blue-walled, and decidedly bare-bones joint. Turned-up tunes on the jukebox compete with the squawks of locals ordering up cheap beer and well liquor or yelling out jokes to their buddies across the bar ("If you throw a cat out the window, is it considered kitty litter?"). With a few TVs, a couple of pool tables, video games shoved in a corner, and walls sparsely decorated with standard-issue beer logo décor, true entertainment can be found in The Caravan's cast of lively characters, some who stop in just to down a shot before making a beeline for the door, and others just trying hard to follow the rules. • C.A.S.A. Sunbá

    C.A.S.A. Sunbá

    15 E. 6th St. Tempe, AZ 85281
480-557-8226 C.A.S.A. SunBá takes the idea of a stylish Tempe drinkery and turns it inside out, literally. There aren’t any pool tables, dart boards, or even walls to speak of at this completely outdoor establishment that’s perched on the Sixth Street sidewalk and comprised of an open air bar, two levels of patio seating, and little else. Flocks of umbrellas, scores of overhead fans, a heavy-duty misting system, and ice-cold cocktails in plastic mini-buckets keep everyone chill in warmer climes with space heaters and hot toddies for the colder months. The wealth of better-than-average brews and primo spirits are always good year-round, as are any of the O.G. Burritos that meals unto themselves with such entrée-like names and fillings as “Thanksgiving Dinner,” “Chinese Take Out,” and “The Steak House.” There’s room enough for a small stage and set of turntables, which means occasional live entertainment to go along with the non-stop parade of freaks and geeks along nearby Mill Avenue. • Casablanca Lounge

    Casablanca Lounge

    7134 E. Stetson Drive Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-970-7888 Spectacular views of both Old Town and Camelback Mountain at sunset aren't the only amenity afforded by this swank third-floor lounge along the Scottsdale Waterfront. Its mixologists labor over their finely created cocktails, whether it’s the half-dozen options on the seasonally rotating menu or such pre-prohibition classics and standards like Sazerac, Old Fashioneds, or Manhattans, which compliment the lounge’s vintage appeal and old-timey blues and jazz acts that gig here. As much art as science, the intricate drink-making process involves measuring exact jiggers from an enormous surplus of first-class intoxicants, including more than 200 different bourbons and scotches, or muddling finely-cut ingredients to create spirits with swagger. And if you’ve indulged in one too many to make it safely downstairs, there’s an elevator that will safely return you to steadier ground. Read more about Casablanca Lounge >>
