Flicka's

Flicka's

Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

So you think you can sing? This West Phoenix watering hole, which offers karaoke action seven nights a week, might just fit the bill. An enthusiastic crowd cheers on regulars who holler out nu-metal hits and hip-hop chartbusters along with the usual tear-jerking ballads from a catalog of more than 50,000 songs. In between turns on the mic, try your hand at billiards, darts, or perhaps some touch-screen video game action, or maybe just read some of the informative-yet-profane graffiti in the restrooms. The bar features 11 brews on tap, 36 different imports and domestics in bottle form, and enough daily specials (such as $2 PBRs) to afford you enough liquid courage to try your hand at the weekend karaoke. Cadillac Ranch

2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-894-1111

http://www.cadillacranchtempe.com Everyone knows riding a bull in a bar isn't just for dudes trying to prove how macho they are. Actually, there's often much more excitement from onlookers when a lady mounts up -- especially when the lass in question is wearing a short skirt while trying to tame the mechanical beast. Enter Cadillac Ranch. This little bit country, little bit rock 'n' roll bar is a prime spot for oglers and oglees, combining the energy of a rock club with the down-home vibe of a honky tonk. It's also located on the second floor of Tempe Marketplace, making it a great place to escape all the junior high school kids roaming around the busy outdoor mall. After dinner hours, the restaurant becomes a haven for an adult crowd, including ASU students looking for some entertainment close to campus. Besides the bull riding entertainment and a big dance floor in the middle of the bar, people flock to Cadillac Ranch for its myriad drink specials. If it's raining, head over for $3 wine, rum and gin specials, as well as $2 Budweiser and Bud Light drafts. Tuesdays mean $2 Mexican beers from 4 p.m. until midnight, Thursdays are $3 you-call-its from 9 to 11 p.m., and Saturdays feature $2.50 Coors Light bottles until midnight. Sip your drink inside, or lounge around out on the patio, which provides a view of a live music stage. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Capitol Sports Lounge

    Capitol Sports Lounge

1801 W. Van Buren St. Phoenix, AZ 85007
    602-254-5110

http://www.capitolsportslounge.com This funky downtown drinking den, located a few blocks from the state Capitol is nothing if not versatile. It's a sports bar, live music venue, and lounge all rolled into one. In the bar, the prime focus is on the televisions, of which the Capitol Sports Lounge has plenty: 14 flat-screens and a 110-inch monster. All the visual firepower pops during football season, when college and pro games are shown literally wall-to-wall all weekend long. For those who aren't quite ready to hit the road after the game is over, there are plenty of jams laid down every evening in the cavernous showroom and lounge. DJs drop a vibrant variety of sounds, ranging from old-school favorites and Top 40 tracks to cumbias and other and Latin dance tracks. In addition to hosting gigs by funk bands and R&B acts throughout the week, the lounge also becomes a hot spot for reggae fans on Saturday and Sunday nights, a testament to the bar's uniqueness. • Captain's

  • The Caravan

    The Caravan

    4835 N. 15th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85015
    602-264-8952

When there's a sign in the bar that says "restrooms for customers only," you know you're in a dive bar. When there are other signs that read "no drinking other people's beer," you know you're at The Caravan. Situated next to a smoke shop and convenience store and adorned with an exterior mural by painter Joerael Elliott that features elements of Hopi, Apache, Navajo, and Pima iconography, The Caravan welcomes its guests into a cavernous, blue-walled, and decidedly bare-bones joint. Turned-up tunes on the jukebox compete with the squawks of locals ordering up cheap beer and well liquor or yelling out jokes to their buddies across the bar ("If you throw a cat out the window, is it considered kitty litter?"). With a few TVs, a couple of pool tables, video games shoved in a corner, and walls sparsely decorated with standard-issue beer logo décor, true entertainment can be found in The Caravan's cast of lively characters, some who stop in just to down a shot before making a beeline for the door, and others just trying hard to follow the rules. Carefree Station Grill & Bar

7212 Ho Hum Road Carefree, AZ 85377
    480-488-8182

http://www.azeats.com/carefreestation Don't let its address on Ho Hum Road fool you, as this North Valley eatery is plenty lively. Steeped in Southwestern charm, Carefree Station offers drinking and dining both inside its sleek and chic dining room and out on its massive plant-lined patio and atrium. At its BevHeaven bar, you'll find wine specials to go along with a daily happy hour that runs from 3 to 6 p.m. Wine is really what stands out on the menu, as Carefree Station offers more than a dozen pages of chardonnays, pinots, rieslings, and other varietals available for purchase. Suffice it to say, you'll have no problem finding the proper wine to go along with the restaurant's American-Southwestern cuisine. Carefree Station might be a bit off the beaten path for a lot of folks in the Valley, but the establishment makes for a great al fresco experience when the weather is cool enough to permit sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air. Dine upstairs in quaint tranquility and coziness, downstairs in a more pubbish setting, or outside on Casey Moore's vast, wrap-around patio. • Catch 22 Sports Grill

    Catch 22 Sports Grill

    18725 N. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85050
    602-482-9222

http://www.catch22phx.com Phoenix's Catch 22 does a little bit of everything. The best category for this place is "sports bar" - they have 28 flatscreen TVs tuned to the big games and a nice selection of tap beers - but the proprietors go the extra mile in a few different directions. Patrons can shoot a little stick or relax on one of the leather couches, which gives the bar a bachelor-pad feel. If you're more interested in music, there's an open mic night on Thursdays and a rotating cast of bands on the weekends. Oh, yes, and they're doing the party-hosting thing, too, with the recent addition of a banquet room and a full menu. The crowd varies by the time and day, but depending on when you stop in you'll find everything from face-painted sports nuts to button-down office workers unwinding after a long day of work. • Centerfold

    Centerfold's Cabaret

    2031 W. Peoria Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85029
    602-678-4664

http://www.myspace.com/centerfoldscabaret Standing out from its more milquetoast neighbors at an otherwise unremarkable North Phoenix shopping center, the red neon sign of Centerfold’s Cabaret beckons the curious through its wrought iron doors with suggestive temptations of scandalous thrills and near-naked delights. Both topless and fully nude entertainment unfolds inside this double-sided club. Hang a left to watch fulsome females take off everything but their g-strings while noshing on American and Italian cuisine options -- including big bowls of pasta, fire-grilled pizzas, or Philly cheesesteaks -- and sample the high-end spirits at its profunds backlit bar glowing in white. Over in the more spartan portion of Centerfold’s, ladies go the “Full Monty” whilst illuminated by a flurry of LED lights. The club's enclosed glass smoking patio features a full view of the smoking hot babes on the stage, allowing puffers to satisfy their nicotine fits and carnal desires simultaneously. • Champions Sports Saloon

    Champions Sports Saloon

    211 N. Gilbert Road Gilbert, AZ 85234
    480-545-9669

http://www.championssportssaloon.com Downtown Gilbert is known for its culinary offerings (see: Joe's BBQ, Liberty Market, and Joe's Farm Grill), but Champions Sports Saloon puts in a serious bid as the area's premier dive bar. Dive may not be the correct world for Champions. Though fondly remembered as The Coin, which was a genuine dive, in the best sense of the word, Champions has received a spit-shine in recent years, though the management has had the good sense to leave the rougher edges intact. The glowing neon sign beams proudly onto the street, beckoning visitors to investigate its wood-paneled interior. The bar's original register still sits proudly on the wall, accompanied by a slew of dartboards, a vintage Galaga/Ms. Pacman Machine, and a glowing Monster Mash pinball machine -- with a patron's high score scrawled on a piece of paper and taped onto the machine itself, a sign of the kind of person you'd want to hang out with for sure.
