  • Catch 22 Sports Grill

    Catch 22 Sports Grill

    18725 N. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85050
    602-482-9222

http://www.catch22phx.com Phoenix's Catch 22 does a little bit of everything. The best category for this place is "sports bar" - they have 28 flatscreen TVs tuned to the big games and a nice selection of tap beers - but the proprietors go the extra mile in a few different directions. Patrons can shoot a little stick or relax on one of the leather couches, which gives the bar a bachelor-pad feel. If you're more interested in music, there's an open mic night on Thursdays and a rotating cast of bands on the weekends. Oh, yes, and they're doing the party-hosting thing, too, with the recent addition of a banquet room and a full menu. The crowd varies by the time and day, but depending on when you stop in you'll find everything from face-painted sports nuts to button-down office workers unwinding after a long day of work. • Champions Sports Saloon

    Champions Sports Saloon

    211 N. Gilbert Road Gilbert, AZ 85234
    480-545-9669

http://www.championssportssaloon.com Downtown Gilbert is known for its culinary offerings (see: Joe's BBQ, Liberty Market, and Joe's Farm Grill), but Champions Sports Saloon puts in a serious bid as the area's premier dive bar. Dive may not be the correct world for Champions. Though fondly remembered as The Coin, which was a genuine dive, in the best sense of the word, Champions has received a spit-shine in recent years, though the management has had the good sense to leave the rougher edges intact. The glowing neon sign beams proudly onto the street, beckoning visitors to investigate its wood-paneled interior. The bar's original register still sits proudly on the wall, accompanied by a slew of dartboards, a vintage Galaga/Ms. Pacman Machine, and a glowing Monster Mash pinball machine -- with a patron's high score scrawled on a piece of paper and taped onto the machine itself, a sign of the kind of person you'd want to hang out with for sure. • Charley

    Charley's Place

    4324 W. Thunderbird Road Glendale, AZ 85306
    602-439-1668

http://www.charleysplace.net Given its location, almost directly across the street from ASU West, it should come as no surprise that this Glendale spirit shack has become a favorite after-class drinking retreat for both students and professors alike. It makes for some intense games of interactive trivia, as collegiate brainiacs try to outdo each other with fierce knowledge of factoids. Charley's Place is also popular with the neighborhood crowd, which comes in for cheap drinks ($2 domestic bottles and well cocktails until 7 p.m. daily), cheap thrills (50-cent pool tables), and karaoke four nights a week, from Thursday through Sunday. Texas Hold'em tournaments also take place every Tuesday, and steak dinner specials are available on Wednesdays and Saturday evenings for those college kids who want to stretch their shoestring budgets. • Charlie

    Charlie's

    727 W. Camelback Road Phoenix, AZ 85013
    602-265-0224

http://www.charliesphoenix.com For years, this swishy CenPho saloon was known as the "lil bitty ol' pissant country place" that almost exclusively attracted only tight-Wranglered gay folk and Marlboro Mary's. But times have changed and so has Charlie's. A renovation last year has improved the décor and expanded its size considerably, offering a much larger dance floor on which a far more diverse crowd can either bust out with two-steppin' or shake their asses to high-energy dance, country music, and Latin-oriented jams all night. Some things haven't changed; there's still the always-muscular bartending staff and after-hours dancing until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

    602-298-0843

http://www.chillybombersnightclub.com During daytime hours, Chilly Bombers has more of a sports bar and grill vibe, featuring comfort food eats and all the big-time athletic action on dozen different HDTV screens. After the sun goes down, however, Chilly Bombers transforms into an off-the-hook dance club. Westside bros and their babes bump their humps to Top 40 and hip-hop or head to the bar to suck down a multicolored selection of specialty bomber drinks, like the sweet sounding Purple Gatorade and Gummy Bear shots. • Chopper John

    Chopper John's

2547 E. Indian School Road Phoenix, AZ 85016
    602-955-0881

http://www.chopperjohns.com/ This place sure has a long legacy behind it: After opening in 1952 as the Red Diamond, this former residence has been known as Cholla Bay, Louie's, VJ's, and McGuires throughout the years. Things settled down when it became the blues joint Warsaw Wally's for a couple of decades, but switched into the 26th Street Blues Bar, and finally Chopper John's. Besides offering live music on Friday and Saturday nights, this nightspot has the usual pool tables, dart machines, and touch-screen video games. Just don't bust your head open on one of the low-hanging rafters. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Citizen R+D

    Citizen R+D

    7111 E. 5th Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    602-904-3904

http://citizenpublichouse.com/rd/ This cozy, intimate Scottsdale lounge is all about its craft cocktails: a lambic sorbet made from raspberry-flavored beer, then turned into a slushy by an old-fashioned paint-can shaker; a berry-and-lemonade punch made with hand-stirred dry ice; and a gin-and-tonic cooked up in a double boiler from 100-proof vodka distilled over dried juniper berries, lemon rinds, and cardamom. There are drinks here made from cotton candy, or fire, or with tiny bottles of bitters inverted into them. If that’s not exclusive enough for you, check this out: one telephones the bouncer to be let into this 28-seat lounge. If there’s room, he’ll come get you and escort you into R&D’s cozy interior, where you’ll enjoy drinks made table-side with hard-to-find ingredients you've never tasted alongside your hooch before. • Cj

    Cj's Talley's

    6022 N. 16 St. Phoenix, AZ 85016
    602-248-7756

http://www.cjstalleyspub.com The folks at Cj's Talley's Pub tend to be a close-knit bunch. The banter between the patrons and the barkeeps is priceless, with everyone cracking jokes about the latest happenings in the social circle, ordering up rounds of Bud Light and Fat Tire, and sharing belly laughs. The hostess is happy to switch channels between sporting matches, and she doesn"t even need to ask most of the crew what they want to drink. The bar comes stocked with normal bar accouterments, like a pool table and bartop games, but the real allure is the friendly vibe; spend a few minutes in Talley's and you'll be amazed how quickly the bartender picks up your name. • CK

    CK's Tavern & Grill

    4142 E. Chandler Blvd. Ahwatukee, AZ 85048
    480-706-5564

http://www.ckgrill.com This eclectic Ahwatukee establishment functions as both a sports joint and live music venue, offering the best of both worlds to its funky and family-oriented clientele. A total of 40 different high-definition flatscreens feature all the major sports packages and are bound to have whatever big game you're seeking. Meanwhile, the fully stocked bar boasts more than 20 beers and cocktails aplenty and the weekend music schedule is packed with rock, blues, and tribute bands from throughout the Valley. But whether they're singing along with their favorite Journey song, asserting their dominance in billiards or shuffleboard, or downing a few ales with friends, CK's patrons always seem to be having a good time. • Clancy

    Clancy's Pub

4432 Miller Road Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-990-8797

http://www.clancysarizona.com The American Midwest meets the Irish cliffs at Clancy's Pub. Banners proclaiming loyalty to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Omaha Nighthawks, and Green Bay Packers share space alongside Guinness clovers and Killian's flags. Night owls recline on green leather stools, watching Bruce Campbell on Burn Notice while sipping draught beers and snacking on burger specials. In keeping with a Midwest sensibility, the vibe here is humble and unassuming, though the right game brings out the cheers and whoops from the blue-collar crowd. Saint Patrick's Day emerald clothing is certainly welcome, but no one is going to differentiate between that and Packers green, and Cornhuskers red is certainly okay, too. • Closing Soon Saloon

    Closing Soon Saloon

    3056 N. 68th St. Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-947-6778

Frogs in gumball machines, potted plants on tables, and men with colorful bandannas are some of the eccentric visual elements on display at this decidedly eclectic Scottsdale gin joint. This neighborhood tavern has lasted more than 25 years, serving up spirits and suds from a storefront wedged between a laundromat and taco shop. The walking-distance locals are as diverse as the jukebox playlist, which ranges from Frank Sinatra and ABBA to a-ha and Zeppelin. Drinkers suck down bargain booze while Scotty the barkeep lines the empties on the bar, keeps watch over the quarter game (drop a coin into a jug of water -- if it lands in the shot glass at the bottom, your next drink is discounted) and doles out raffle tickets for the "Cash for Customers" game, in which the winning number means more green and another night of strange times at the Closing Soon Saloon. • Club Zarape

    Club Zarape

    1730 E. McDowell Road Phoenix, AZ 85006
    480-946-0416

To say that this CenPho showclub and gay vaquero bar is colorful would be an understatement. A lively variety of neon lights and multicolored decorations mix with a vibrant vibe and diverse clientele that visit Zarape on a nightly basis. Its female illusionist revues blend sass, style, music, and comedy into playful drag spectaculars featuring hits from such popular Latina divas as Shakira and Gloria Trevi being lip-synched by local drag artists, who also add plenty of wit, charm, and well-timed raunch into their trills. But when the revues end and the spotlight dims, these colorful characters don't vacate the premises. They're just as apt to hang out and interact with the cowboy-booted caballeros that stop by Zarape to spend the evening dancing to salsa, cumbia, banda and norteño music. • Coach House

    Coach House

7011 E. Indian School Road Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-990-3433

http://www.coachhousescottsdale.com Arguably Scottsdale's favorite spot for slumming, the Coach House is a rustic-looking wooden-walled watering hole with a divey vibe and storied past. Built in 1959, this homespun joint is certifiably old-school Scottsdale and has been serving up booze and beer to generations of drinkers. It's packed to the low-slung rafters most nights (even more so on the weekends) with crowds three-deep angling to get their drink on either inside at the tiny main bar or outside on the patio. • Connolly

    Connolly's Bar & Grill

    5160 W. Northern Ave. Glendale, AZ 85301
    623-224-9410

The regulars at this A-frame establishment definitely know how to have a good time, even if it's during the middle of the workweek. Roll up to Connolly's on an average night and witness the upbeat and laid-back atmosphere of the place. Smokers gather outside the front door, yelling jukebox suggestions between puffs or playfully taunting pool players. Meanwhile, the drink-slinging staff are busy pouring such drink specials as $3 domestic pints and well cocktails while conversing with the old school rockers and blue-collar folk gathered at their bar. CityScape's Copper Blues boasts a 60-tap draught beer menu packed with everything from standard domestics to handcrafted artisanal beers and even their own in-house brew. A whole lot of top-shelf liquor gets the vibe going at this warm, dimly-lit blues bar, where bands keep the beat on a stage lined with taps, one of the spot's two bars. The second floor location gives views of Central Avenue and the downtown skyline, while plush leather couches and dozens of tables keep things comfortable in the massive indoor space. Though the bar is essentially an expansion of CityScape's comedy club, Stand Up Live, Copper Blues has carved out a niche of its own. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
