Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale.

    Draw 10 Bar and Grill

    5444 E. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ 85034
    602-273-1061

http://www.draw10bar.com An oasis of alcoholic bliss tucked away amongst office buildings and industrial parks, Draw 10 beckons to both the white- and blue-collar crowds looking for a drink at lunchtime or after the work day's done. The large rectangular bar dominates the establishment, ringed with a rainbow selection of illuminated bottles and an equally colorful cross-section of neighborhood regulars. And just what are they drinking? Those with big thirsts can grab monstrous 32-ounce mugs of domestic drafts like Bud Light and Coors for $4.50 each. If you aren't that parched, partake in 16-ounce pints of Blue Moon or Fat Tire for $5. Weekly poker nights also take place on Wednesday and Saturday nights, while the back room has been known to host the occasional one-off DJ night. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • The Dressing Room

    The Dressing Room

    220 E. Roosevelt St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
    480-998-6926

Colorfully quirky and filled with bohemian charm, this shoebox-shaped structure located adjacent to MonOrchid fits in with the eccentric array of galleries, boutiques, art spaces, and music venues dotting Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix. Most of the week, it serves as a rehearsal and recording space for the members of rock band Wooden Indian. On First Fridays and occasional weekends, however, the Dressing Room hosts gigs by local rock and indie acts, where standing-room-only crowds are lit by the glow of Christmas lights hanging from the exposed rafters. • The Dubliner Irish Pub & Restaurant

The Dubliner Irish Pub & Restaurant

    3841 E. Thunderbird Road Phoenix, AZ 85032
    602-867-0984

http://www.dublinerpub.com Considered the oldest Irish joint in Arizona, the Dubliner also has the unique distinction of having been the first bar to sell Guinness in the Valley. Its braggadocious bartenders also claim its annual Saint Patrick's Day party is the biggest around, their craic is mightier, and that there's more traditional Ireland-style entertainment each week at the Dubliner than any of their competitors. It's hard to argue with the latter boast, since the North Phoenix public house has showcased Celtic musicians almost every night for close to a quarter century. Sired in 1986 by renowned local publican Seamus McCaffery, it's maintained the same neighborhood bar vibe mixed with the usual Emerald Isle touches and tchotchkes throughout the years. • The Duce

    The Duce

    525 S. Central Phoenix, AZ 85004
    602-866-3823

http://www.theducephx.com Don't judge a book by its cover. The understated exterior hardly does justice to everything that goes on inside, including swing dancing, boxing, and shopping. As far as the drinking goes, The Duce has an impressive selection of old school cocktails as well as few specialties you won't find anywhere else. The vintage trailer serves up some great comfort foods, including pot pies and sliders. The Duce offers ping-pong, shuffleboard, corn hole and foosball, so it's practically like you can get a work out while you drink. After all, it is part gym. • Dunes Lounge

    Dunes Lounge

    3611 W. Dunlap Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85051
    602-973-2519

http://www.duneslounge.com Karaoke is a major-league pastime at this comfortable North Phoenix dive. Folks sign up to sing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and tend to get increasingly, uh, invested in their songs as the night wears on (don't be surprised to see table-hopping or other outlandish theatrics). Although the bartending staff doesn't always share in the enthusiasm (and will sometimes caution singers to slow their roll), they're plenty happy to pour patrons a pint or maybe a Bloody Mary, which is on special from open until close. Pool tables, darts, and video games are also available, and the comfy bar stools and blond-wood furnishings add to the homey atmosphere. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Durant

    Durant's

    2611 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004
    602-264-5967

http://www.durantsaz.com The first and last word in old-school cool in dowtown Phoenix. For more than half a century, the house Jack Durant built has served up class by the barrelful as well as classics like sautéed chicken livers, oysters Rockefeller, lamb chops with mint jelly, and Delmonico steaks, to name a few. Serious fressers can eat their way to a plaque on the wall by polishing off Durant's 48-ounce porterhouse, and you get to do so in leather booths that once hosted Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Robert Mitchum, among other luminaries. Walking through the kitchen to the dining room is an experience in and of itself. And the bar crowd is lively and entertaining. Partake in the legend for yourself by imbibing a few dry martinis or a Dewar's on the rocks whilst relaxing in a banquette once occupied by Barry Goldwater. You'll be totally money, baby. 602-258-8343

Part of the same downtown Phoenix club complex that houses Palazzo and Amsterdam, DWNTWN is a red-hot dance destination with two bars and two dance floors, an upscale dress code, and a mostly Hispanic clientele that fills the place to capacity on weekends. 480-607-1941

http://www.earlsrestaurants.com The only things Canada usually sends to the Valley are Arctic cold fronts and snowbirds. But now this popular north-of-the-border chain has settled here, and north Scottsdalians will be pleased. The stylish, around-the-globe fare ranges from chicken Hunan to first-rate pizzas and baby-back ribs. Finish up with the apple and raspberry cobbler. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • El Capri

    El Capri

2135 E. Van Buren St. Phoenix, AZ 85034
    602-244-0551

For most of the week, this east-side discoteca remains cold and dark, hidden behind a chain-link fence and locked up tighter than Fort Knox. On Friday and Saturday nights, however, the place comes alive with colored lights, hundreds of dancers, and Latin beats. The interior is home to a rollicking sea of dancing humanity, including plenty of caballeros y damas. Though the bar offers good selection of tequilas and south-of-border beers, the focus of El Capri is more on dancing than drinking. A steady stream of bachata, banda, and cumbia is pumped out by the DJs, while norteño bands occasionally perform. Gentlemen typically sport sharp cowboy garb and ostrich-skin boots, while ladies tend toward tight dresses, low-cut blouses, and skintight jeans. Even if you don't get to bailar with a bonita babe by night's end, chances are you'll eventually run into her mingling about or at the Mexican food joint down the street. • El Dorado Bar & Grill

    El Dorado Bar & Grill

    8708 E. McDowell Road Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-945-2606

http://www.eldoradobarandgrill.com A magnet for bikers, barflies, and the blue-collar brigade, this rough-around-the-edges roadhouse in south Scottsdale features a nightly cast of characters that are just as colorful as the neon beer signs on its walls. From slick-looking billiards sharks engaging in nine-ball on the tables to the hippies and housewives playing board games around the horseshoe-shaped bar, the El Dorado is always bustling with activity. Its live entertainment schedule is just as energetic, with karaoke taking place five times a week and a popular blues jam on Wednesdays. Patrons also pack the place for ladies night on Tuesday, which offers 50-cent beers, free pool, and just as many guys in attendance as girls. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • El Hefe Super Macho Taqueria

    El Hefe Super Macho Taqueria

    4425 N. Saddlebag Trail Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480.945.6200

http://www.elhefetacos.com Along with an ingenious invention called table taps, self-serve beer taps of Coors Light and Dos Equis at each booth, there are a few decent food offerings to go along with the good times in this Mexican-themed bar and restaurant in Scottsdale’s entertainment district. The Sonoran-style menu, created by former Noca sous chef Steven Smith, features a humble offering of surprisingly wallet-friendly traditional standards with a few twists. Satisfying fare includes the macho nachos and the house made churros, but the best dish is the least Mexican one: the hamburger. Enjoy one paired with a selection of several alcoholic offerings from El Hefe (the name a play on the word jefe, the Spanish word for "boss”), in an atmosphere more metrosexual than macho. • Elite Cabaret Gentleman

Elite Cabaret Gentleman's Club at 910 Live

    910 N. McClintock Drive Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-966-0707

You'd be hard-pressed to find a single strip club in the Valley that doesn't feature rock 'n' roll blaring as exotic dancers bump and grind away. Elite Cabaret at 910 Live is no exception, as its music mix is heavy on classic jams from the likes of Gary Glitter, Cheap Trick, and The Doors. Thing is, this Tempe strip club will do you one better: There's an open-air concert space in the back hosting live rock gigs. Earlier this year, the proprietors of 910 Live transformed the interior of the nightclub and venue, which once served as infamous rock bar Boston's, into a ritzy topless club drenched in pink and purple hues and boasting multiple stages and swank furnishings. The live music moved outdoors, where cabanas and seating ring a 40-square-foot stage. Since the changeover, it's featured appearances from rock icons like George Lynch of Dokken, who performed in April, and former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock and Blondie drummer Clem Burke's The International Swingers in May. Best of all, concert admission gets you into the cabaret, where you can have your own personal after-party. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Enoch

    Enoch's Sports Lounge

    6750 W. Peoria Ave. Peoria, AZ 85345
    623-878-6296

Enoch's Sports Lounge is nowhere near as ancient as its Biblical namesake, but the amicably scruffy dive on the edges of Peoria has seen plenty of mileage since opening around two decades ago. Most noticeably, its formerly fire engine-red carpet is now a threadbare salmon from years of the Enoch’s faithful’s feet padding around the sprawling premises. Pony-tailed pool wizards traipse around any of the four billiards tables or amble over to a set of stained wooden lockers to stow their gear, while drinkers hop down from cafeteria-style metal stools welded to funky-looking island tables to hit up Carolyn and the other amicable cocktail-slinging divas for another round. Said crew can also supply salty snacks, and tickets for either the daily raffle for half-priced drinks or the Arizona Lottery variety. If patrons somehow get lucky in a more illicit fashion, however, they can head for the men’s room, which is replete with a “health care convenience center,” better known as a condom machine.
