  • Gringo Star Street Bar

    Gringo Star Street Bar

501 South Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-306-8633

http://www.gringostarstreetbar.com Given that two major pastimes for college kids are drinking and gaming, putting a hybrid bar and arcade like Gringo-Star Street Bar within fragging distance of Arizona State University is an idea worthy of the Mother Brain herself. The Mill Avenue spot levels up the hipness factor even further by mixing vintage video games (10 arcade classics like Galaga, and Street Fighter II, plus two Nintendo 64 consoles and skeeball machines) with vibrant street art murals from Lalo Cota, JB Snyder, and Sierra Joy, as well as such street eats as Sonoran hot dogs, green chili pork tacos, and Korean spiced beef. Games are free to play every Mondays and the bar offers several drink specials, while the big DJ nights on Friday and Saturday bring out both bottle-poppers and quarter-droppers. • Groggy

    Groggy's

    2207 W. Main St. Mesa, AZ 85201
    480-969-7648

There's no clearer illustration of how this Mesa mainstay toes the line between family-friendly establishment and dive bar than its claw machine, which is filled with stuffed animals and, ahem, adult novelties. Beyond this incongruous mix of innocence and outrageousness, Groggy's offers numerous pool tables and a relaxed environment, no matter how intense the billiards action becomes. All three flags of North America (Canada, the United States, and Mexico) hang on the wall of the bar, seemingly underscoring the unity shared by its patrons in their common pursuit of a good time. Both neighborhood folk and students from the nearby Mesa Community College visit in search of $2.50 happy hour specials on Budweiser beers, or perhaps for a few games of nine ball. Groggy's also features a vintage outdoor sign (depicting a wild-eyed frog gripping a pool cue and frosty mug), which proudly proclaims the establishment's M.O. of "good food, good fun, good spirits." • The Gym Grill and Bar

    The Gym Grill and Bar

    2510 E. Hunt Highway Chandler, AZ 85243
    480-677-2146

http://www.thegymgrillandbar.com You've got to give it to the owner of the Gym Grill & Bar in Queen Creek. When asked where you've been all night, the Gym sounds like a pretty reasonable answer. You'll find some lockers in The Gym, but other than that, you're mostly looking at good-time standards, like 16 beers on tap and strategically placed big-screens airing the games. The signature horseshoe-shaped bar comes with an interesting story, too. Brought over from Washington's famous Blackies House of Beef, you could be sitting in the same spot as President Harry S Truman, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, or President John F. Kennedy, all men who at one time or another would have required the relaxation and cold draught afforded by the staff at The Gym. Read more about The Gym Grill and Bar >>

  • Gypsy Bar

    Gypsy Bar

    50 W. Jefferson St. Phoenix, AZ 85003
    602-732-5490

http://www.gypsybarphoenix.com Like other flashy downtown Phoenix nightspots, Gypsy Bar comes alive with light, sound, movement and color after sundown, with life emanating from both its lustrous, LED-laden in-house dance club and the adjacent arcade teeming with more than 40 state-of-the-art video games. Inside this second-story adult playground next to CityScape’s Lucky Strike, the thrum of electronic beats wrought by DJs performing between a pair of HD video screens blends with the electronic bleeps from skeeball machines, redemption games, and two-player interactive arcade contraptions like Guitar Hero and 2 Fast 2 Furious. At the center of this audio-visual maelstrom is a three-sided bar and dining area, where you can score street tacos, short rib sliders, flatbread pizzas and other New American small plates, as well as any of 30 specialty cocktails, in-between getting your dance on or game on. • Half Moon Sports Grill

    Half Moon Sports Grill

    2121 E. Highland Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85016
    602-977-2700

http://www.halfmoonsportsgrill.com At first blush, Half Moon might seem to be strictly a "guys night out" kind of bar. After all, pictures of half-exposed hineys are scattered throughout the establishment, the wait staff consists almost entirely of young and attractive women in form-fitting tank tops, and there's nothing but sports on all the TVs. If you look past the obvious nods to man-cave culture, however, you'll find that this is also one of the more appealing sports bars for the fairer sex as well. Perhaps it's due to its proximity to the Biltmore (or even a menu that balances pub grub with such selections as the pear gorgonzola salad), but the establishment just feels classier than your run-of-the-mill sports bar. Patrons run the gamut from college kids and urban professionals to families with children and a slew of Alabama expats (the bar hosts a significant Crimson Tide contingent every Saturday during football season). With excellent happy hour specials and private party rooms, Half Moon is a great destination for groups large and small. Read more about Half Moon Sports Grill >>

  • Half Moon Sports Grill

    Half Moon Sports Grill

    288 E. Greenway Road Phoenix, AZ 85022
    602-993-6600

http://www.halfmoonsportsgrill.com Your eyes will get a workout inside this North Phoenix jock joint. Besides its abundance of attractive waitresses and bartenders you'd swear do some modeling, tasteful photos of almost-uncovered derrières hang from the walls. If you prefer to watch sports instead of indulging your voyeuristic tendencies, more than 50 HDTVs are tuned to ESPN, FSN and Sunday Ticket. Want a little more solitude? The bar has private viewing rooms, where your crew can take in a game without suffering taunts from opposing fans. There are also plenty of comfy couches throughout to relax on while watching your particular team. For deals on food and drinks, stop by during the all-day happy hour from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays or during "Lunar Time" (the bar's reverse happy hour from 10 p.m. to close) when specials include $3 well drinks and house wines, as well as half-price starters. • Hambone Sports Bar and Grill

    Hambone Sports Bar and Grill

    903 E. Main St. Mesa, AZ 85203
    480-833-9839

A dive bar institution for generations (take note of the vintage neon sign) Hambone is a place for booze pigs from all walks of life to gather for cocktails and conversation. It's visited by day drinkers eager to get an early start courtesy of the bar's 6 a.m. happy hour, as well as the working class crowd looking to unwind after a hard day's labor. The stained cement floor contains a record of decades of spilled drinks and the graffiti in the bathrooms is always entertaining to read. Folks here spend as much time smoking by the front door as they do drinking and playing pool on any of the six available tables. The soundtrack coming from the Internet jukebox is almost always of the classic rock and country variety, so you might get a few raised eyebrows from patrons if you wanna hear Lady Gaga or Kanye. • Handlebar-J

    Handlebar-J

    7116 E. Becker Lane Scottsdale, AZ 85254
    480-948-0110

http://www.handlebarj.com Cowpokes and country music fans have been moseying into this honky-tonk hideout since the 1960s, back when Waylon Jennings was a regular and patrons rode up on horseback. While the surrounding North Scottsdale neighborhood may have become a little more upscale in the ensuing decades, things have stayed pretty much the same at this saloon and steakhouse about 15 minutes north of Old Town. Handlebar-J’s sprawling bar still beckons boot-scooters and broncobusters, while cowboy hats still line the rafters, and both porterhouses and beefy burgers still sizzle in the kitchen. Grab your boots and take a swing on the enormous dance floor where twangy tunes are provided by the Herndon Brothers Band, fronted by Nashville recording artist Ray Herndon, most nights a week. Or if boot-scootin' ain't your saddlebag, pardner, sample some of the barbecue drenched in homemade sauce or amble on out to the patio and taste your tallboy in the great outdoors. Shucks, you might even wind up drinking next to a celebrity. Crooners like Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, and Vince Gill have all stopped by in the past. Read more about Handlebar-J >>

  • Hanny

    Hanny's

    40 N. 1st St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
    602-252-2285

http://www.hannys.net Like its stark International Style building facade, Hanny's all-day menu is streamlined, featuring just a handful of starters, pizzas, sandwiches, and salads. It's well-crafted, affordable fare that's perfect for a light lunch, an informal dinner, a happy hour snack, or a late-night nosh -- not destination dining by any stretch, but considering the beautifully restored surroundings and the sheer character that this place brings to the area, it's still a Phoenix destination. Plus, those $5 martinis are a killer deal. Read more about Hanny's >>

  • Harold

    Harold's Cave Creek Corral

6895 E. Cave Creek Road Cave Creek, AZ 85331
    480-488-1906

http://www.haroldscorral.com There's cowboy fare at lunch and dinner, and great daily "all you can eat" specials, but this place also serves a hearty all-American breakfast. The pièce de résistance: the ranch-hand omelet calzone, a three-egg beauty stuffed with ground beef, spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, enfolded in pizza dough and baked. Bring a friend, and share. • Harry

    Harry's Last Call

    9521 N. 7th St. Phoenix, AZ 85020
    602-944-9944

The building that houses Harry's Last Call has a long history of providing cold brews and mixed drinks for its Sunnyslope clientele. Formerly The Brass Belt, the building has stood for 30 years, the past 10 of which have served as the home of Harry's, a no-nonsense watering hole heavy on simple pleasures. Patrons shoot pool and toss friendly putdowns back and forth, ordering up rounds of domestic suds and making wagers on games of darts. The bar is dark, but catch the place on a lazy afternoon, when the sun streams in through an open door, and the glint off the trophies housed in the back creates an almost Christmas light-like effect. • Hazelwood

    Hazelwood's First Place Sports Grill

3626 E. Indian School Road Phoenix, AZ 85018
    602-957-2462

http://www.hazelwoodsfirstplace.com When sports nuts shuffle off the mortal coil and head for the great ballpark in the sky, we're certain that their afterlife looks a great deal like Hazelwood's. This Arcadia establishment is the very definition of what a sports bar should be. HDTVs cover every conceivable surface, including flat-screens at each of its 24 booths, all of which air a wide variety of sporting contests. The owners wear their Phoenix Suns fandom on their sleeves, outfitting the place with various and sundry team memorabilia. A gleaming row of 16 beer taps provides brews both foreign and domestic. And there's shuffleboard and pool in the back, and weekly poker, karaoke, and trivia nights, as well. Read more about Hazelwood's First Place Sports Grill >>

  • H.B. Hanratty

    H.B. Hanratty's Pub

    537 E. Camelback Road Phoenix, AZ 85012
    602-274-3067

Just who is H.B. Hanratty? Ask any of the regulars at this Camelback Road mainstay -- from the businesslike barkeeps pouring dollar shots, to the curious-but-shy locals -- and you'll likely get shrugs, blank stares, or exclamations of "Who cares? Just have a beer." Billed as a "place for serious drinkers," this old-timey pub (which features perfect pool tables, old-school darts, a modest kitchen, and a slightly Western feel) fancies itself a hangout for neighborhood types, service industry folks who can show their pay stubs for a free drink, and Ohio State University alumni that take over Hanratty's on big game weekends. https://www.facebook.com/thehiddenhousephx Thanks to Al Page and his weekend DJ nights, the Hidden House has built up a certain reputation over the past half-decade as a hip-hop music paradise. But while ghetto-fab types and hepcats fill the place on Fridays and Saturdays, there's more than just fly music and urban beats to be had at this double-sided CenPho dive. Over in the bar and restaurant, hipsters drink down $4 mini-pitchers or $3 pints, shoot darts, or get in some eight ball action on six different pool tables, or enjoy some conversation time while sitting in any of the joint's many booths. • The Hideaway Grill

    The Hideaway Grill

6746 E. Cave Creek Road Cave Creek, AZ 85331
    480-595-0358

http://www.hideaway-usa.com This trendy bar hangout has become a national destination for bikers from all over the country-and not just because it's owned by a motorcycle fanatic. It might be the Famous Hideaway Pizza, a pie that's known only to ever have been eaten alone on one occasion. It's great for sharing, is what we're saying; piled high with tangy marinara and as many cheeses as you can order. Also yummy is the Roast Beef Melt, made with fresh-shaved, home-cooked beef roast and filled with onions and cheese. The Chili Burger is great for hearty appetites, and for fussier eaters, we've had the very delicious Chicken Cordon Bleu, and plan to go back for more of it-and we don't even own a chopper!
