Enoch's Sports Lounge is nowhere near as ancient as its Biblical namesake, but the amicably scruffy dive on the edges of Peoria has seen plenty of mileage since opening around two decades ago. Most noticeably, its formerly fire engine-red carpet is now a threadbare salmon from years of the Enoch’s faithful’s feet padding around the sprawling premises. Pony-tailed pool wizards traipse around any of the four billiards tables or amble over to a set of stained wooden lockers to stow their gear, while drinkers hop down from cafeteria-style metal stools welded to funky-looking island tables to hit up Carolyn and the other amicable cocktail-slinging divas for another round. Said crew can also supply salty snacks, and tickets for either the daily raffle for half-priced drinks or the Arizona Lottery variety. If patrons somehow get lucky in a more illicit fashion, however, they can head for the men’s room, which is replete with a “health care convenience center,” better known as a condom machine. http://www.myspace.com/385639978 Here's a fun game you and your pals can play as you make the drive out to FuNuGyz: place a few bets on how exactly the name is pronounced. Fun-you-guys? Few-new-guys? Foo-noo-geez? The bartenders may roll their eyes if you ask, but what service-industry employee hasn't had to suffer the whims of ownership every now and then? There are plenty of television screens to distract you from the answer, and a large crowd of folks willing to rhapsodize about FuNuGyz's massive wings (especially on Monday's 25-cent wing night). Spend a little time there and you'll start to feel like a Glendale regular in no time, wagering wings on the sporting events. The chili fries and around-the-clock breakfast menu are both culinary charms, but you can also sign up for Kickers Mixed Martial Arts classes, a great way to work off the sips and snacks. http://www.gallaghersaz.com Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.hootersaz.com Home of the double entendre, the Hooters chain has become an American icon over the course of its short life. Founded in Florida during the glorious 1980s, the company with a hooting owl for a logo boasts its own magazine, a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, and famous alumni like Hugh Hefner's former girlfriend Holly Madison. The Hooters girls at each of the 450 locations are the heart and soul (or is it the "T and A"?) of the company; from the American Midwest to the Czech Republic to Tokyo, every girl sports the same bright orange short-shorts, flesh-colored pantyhose and white sneakers. Perhaps it could be the food that keeps loyal Phoenix customers coming back. The menu focuses on chicken wings, with sauces ranging from mild to atomic, but there are also seasoned curly fries, shrimp, oysters, crab legs, burgers, and sandwiches, along with plenty of televisions tuned to whatever's going on in the sports world. Check out your local Hooters on Voice Places. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
http://www.themoonsaloon.com The area around Arrowhead Mall along Bell Road in Peoria feels like a convention for corporate chain restaurants. There’s everything from Olive Garden and On the Border to Fuddrucker’s and Rock Bottom Brewery. Hidden in the mix – behind the Hooters – is The Moon Saloon, a sports bar that serves more than cheap beer. The place gets packed when the Suns and Cardinals play, and with plenty of TVs and cheering regulars, it’s a great atmosphere to root on the home teams. The bar also airs baseball, hockey, and select UFC pay-per-view fights. Sit in one of the red vinyl booths on a weekday from 3 to 7 p.m., and you can take advantage of two-for-one draft pints, well drinks, house wines, and eight varieties of sliders, including beer brat, bacon cheddar, and meatball parmesan. There are also snacks like fried pickles and fresh-baked pretzels, burgers, pizza, sandwiches, wraps, and salads to choose from. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
Pretend you’re in the Big Apple at one of 20 Native New Yorker restaurants in the greater Phoenix area. The pizza doesn’t taste exactly like the real thing, but there’s plenty to go around, including the Meaty Beast (pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, and meatballs) and Buffalo Chicken (spicy pizza topped with grilled chicken, hot sauce, ranch dressing, onions, peppers, mozzarella, and cheddar). These casual quick service eateries also serve calzones, wings (bone-in or boneless), salads, burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers like potato skins and chicken bacon ranch bruschetta. The menu also has Italian pasta dishes and a variety of seafood, such as the Friday Fish Fry with coleslaw, garlic bread, and a cup of chowder. In addition to locations from Anthem to Queen Creek, Native New Yorker restaurants can be found in Tucson, San Tan Valley, Flagstaff, and Show Low with restaurants planned to open in Colorado and Texas later this year.
